Having had the timing done belt done with interim service the car was now ready for delivery to daughter. Covered journey of about 70 miles uneventfully until last mile when the power steering failed. However, after a cup of tea and investigation the PS light had gone out and steering OK. When the car was collected at purchase it had loads of water in cabin due to the drain plugs being bunged up and had been standing a number of months. Yes, the alternator does sound noisy but the battery kicks the engine into life, although its untested.
Followed Koalar and "EPS electric power steering faults" guidance which is great but being that distance from car makes life difficult so looking for a recommended local mechanic, preferably a Panda man around Braintree area, in Essex to bottom problem out.
Any further advice very much appreciated.

Hi,
Was this it's first trip in a while?

Battery condition is a requirement, along with charging circuit

See @lorna., and her panda PAS woes

I had a Punto that occasionally failed to charge, SO the PAS would fail

Worth checking that isn't the case 🙂

look at posts from longtime member Dave to see if any local mechanics were reommended

This was one of his..

Will check that, the car has stood we understand for about 12 months and the alternator just today has started to scream so that's due for a change anyway.
Thanks for the info on garage.

That sounds like the alternator has dried up try spraying some WD40 in it whilst its running (could save you some money) also spray a bit on the belt as well. It won't do any harm if it doesn't do any good.
