Did'nt even know diesels had a redline I've always thought that if you could get a diesel up to a certain amount of RPM it'll do that all day.

tell me how many diesels have a red line over 5000rpm! And even then they are puffing by 4000rpm! I'm not saying it will be slow, but you just cant rag a diesel like a petrol! The diesel might pull away quicker, but you don't get the same sensation! You might get more of a shove, but its that watching the rev needle go round the gauge thats got the raz buzz word!

And yes, i have driven a modern diesel, nowt wrong with em! Nowt wrong with my car either! Afterall you might have a quicker car, but its also gonna take you 160,000 miles to recoup the difference in cost/running costs! :p

160k miles?! "95% of stats are made up on the spot".

I don't see your point?! You're saying that it's better to have a petrol as it revs higher? So what?! Revs are nothing if they aren't turned in what matters, turning the wheels!

You can raz a diesel, trust me. Raz to me means that you drive it harder than normal. Normal diesel driving you won't see above 3k revs. Heavy diesel driving you will go passed 4k. Not that it makes any difference. You have got the power before you go there so you change up to do the same again. Whilst you're still going through your 1-4k range with flintstone style power waiting for your little kick.

Then the diesel owner can lift their foot off and get 70mpg doing 60mph in 5th....

Why else do you think diesels sell? Nowadays you can get decent performance when you want it (and still not exactly poor economy) yet still drive it economically when you want. I am sure the 100BHP 1.5dci Clio goes some but it will do about 100mpg at 56mph in 5th gear.....!

The diesel vs. petrol debate continues...;)

This just seems like another pointless argument/debate or however you wanna put it. Everyone is going to have their own opinion on what is best for whichever purpose, and imo there's never going to be a winner.
Personally I dislike diesels, mainly because of the extra noise in comparison to petrol engines, i know thats improved over the years but it's still there. Thats probably the only reason why i wouldn't buy one for myself.

I personally love the sound of a diesel under acceleration (possibly why you have bought your fabia WR?). Cruising it sounds quieter (fewer revs) though at standstill of course you can still tell it's a diesel these days.

Yeah I love the whistle of the turbo, not a main reason of buying it but will be nice to have when I get it. Tested on the motorway, there was a very faint/distant hum I can live with. And like you say when its cold or youre at the lights it does chug a bit lol again nothing I couldnt live with!

Fair enough to people who dont like the noise but imo I think i've made the right choice.

Havn't you fitted a loud exhaust to your Stilo?? :p ;)
I wouldn't say it's a loud exhaust no, it just brings out the lovely noise of the 5 cylinder block which is precisely my point. You would hardly want to do the same thing with a diesel would you ;)

BTW love the interior on that skoda WRP, looks very cleanly designed and sporty :)

I missed 5 major factors? err when? I didn't factor in insurance cost differences, road tax or servicing costs..... that would make the payback time/milage even higher/longer!

At least i bring something to this site, not just here to rip into others, i've done research, i've done investigation..... not just re-gurgitating stuff others have written else where! :p

ok, firstly I am pretty sure you used a 1.2 stilo as a comparison. Erm, the 1.9JTD is a lot quicker...so unfair comparison. Maybe the 1.6 or 1.8 is a fairer comparison. Then your MPG drops sub 30, not whatever you used.

Now the cars are more even you have to remember that with 75k on the clock, the diesel is just starting its life, the petrol is over the hill. That means the diesel is worth a hell of a lot more than the petrol. Find me a JTD second hand anywhere near the value of a 1.2.

If you do high motorway mileage your MPG in a petrol will not be much above the average MPG, the diesel however will do stupidly high compared (i.e. 1.5dci clio 80 doing 109MPG at 56mph in 5th.....!!!).

This is where the way that they calculated 'average' MPG becomes unfair. If you do more motorway/higher speed cruising then the actual MPg for a diesel will be a lot higher, the petrol slightly higher.

I am not sure about the 1.6/1.8 but I assume the JTD has a service interval of 18k.....not bad hey.

The lack of complexity of a diesel engine electronically means that you're a lot more likely to have problems with the electrics on a petrol engine.

The diesel will go for 200K + if well looked after, a petrol won't see that in 99% of cases.

Insurance, I do believe that the JTD is the same/lower than the 1.8.

Wheres James to support me? hehe

I don't rip into you ever, no more than you do to me, I find it fun and I told you I admire you for sticking by your guns constantly!

These sorts of reasons are why people buy diesels. I am pretty sure you quoted that the RAC did research and found you only need to drive 36k before it becomes savings over getting a petrol.

It is down to personal choice really. Negotiator is right, a Stilo JTD needs to be compared to the 1.8 for a real and meaningful comparrison.

Diesels can also emit a pleasent noise, the Alfa 147 Multijet I had yesterday sounded very 'throaty' in a nice way. With a petrol engine you are only in it's 'power' zone if you thrash it, with a diesel you are in it most of the time.

If you want 6500rpm a diesel will never be an option, but if you want relaxed and flexible performance in normal and spirited (rather than maniac) driving then a diesel has to be a serious option ;)

nb; Both Stilo petrol and diesel models have 12K service intervals (y)
