Now I am confused, where is that new thread Nicko started up? Ah well, I just wanted to see if he had given up yet.

It irritates me, I am not quite sure why, I thought it was all sorted yesterday and now I feel like it's all being carried on for no reason.

RE: copyright, surely if this person is correct, I can reproduce a DVD/Website/Piece of art etc. etc. aslong as I make sure it is for reviewing? Is it another grey area of the law?

I was thinking about the art piece myself actually as you do see art in magazines thats has been photographed. I do believe with regards to the review though that it relates to the person themself taking the photo of the object, not stealing someone elses... (the photo is not being reviewed, the car is)

That just shows what sort of people they are I think... before I thought they were just well over the top with their (personal) insults but blatant lying (and they also lied about never banning any of their members) is just unbelieveable! These people really are pathetic!

All this and I don't mind saying that I personally hate that car as I do most of the others they showcase on barryboys!

That's interesting, although I assume in the case of art permission would have been gained. If the person is right basically copyright means nothing anymore as it can be reproduced at any time aslong as it is being reviewed. *Just goes off to copy and "review" phoenix nights ;)* (jk)

THe problem with these things is that so much is open to intereptation and that makes it hard to get a hard and fast ruling. You and I can interept it as being allowed in certain circumstance yet another person can ascertain it's ok in any circumstance. Ah well.

The person in question actually PM'ed me on BB.

A lot of sites particularly MP3 sites say you are allowed to copy material for your own use, for a period of up to 24 hours. This has been quoted in many places. I personally do not believe this to be the case. Bare in mind when most of the copyright laws were written most material that it was possible to copyright would have been patent related stuff, so there is no way that they would have written in that people have access to these patents for 24 hours, giving them the opportunity to develop something based on similar knowledge/technology. That was the very thing that patents were introduced to try to protect against.

one of my father's friends is a copyrighter and patents specialist, he gave me some advice on my business idea I had about it, I just wish I was friends with him for his opinion.

The 24 hour thing was an odd one, I think MP3 sites just put it as a sort of disclaimer. Not that disclaimers hold up in court! I remember it being on sites.

Despite all this, even in the worst case scenerio of the intereptation of the law, the fact is that "fair use" couldn't be defined as **** taking of the car in the photo.

Based on the laws surrounding freedom of speech, you could argue that it is fair use. After all there is no guarantee that everyone who posts will take the ****, the fact that most do isn't something that the person who posted the original pic is responsible for even if he knew that would be the response.

But the contents of the replies especially the personal nature?

Freedom of speech stops at a point though, when you infringe somebody's human rights. Yet one of the UN human right's is freedom of speech ;)

Don't you just adore the law?

I still want to know if it means I can copy a DVD to review it?

We've covered the human rights/freedom of speech conflict before.

As far as I am concerned you can only copy a DVD that you already own and the copy is for backup purposes only. Many people do this and use the copy, to avoid damaging the original. There may be exceptions for special purposes such as reviewing, but again it would only be with the consent of the owner of the copyrighted material.

As far as I know, no-one from this site has been banned. Either you're trying to use a hotmail or yahoo address, or you're doing it wrong.
Keep posting on Barryboys. We like opinated idiots to abuse.

Fulani, none of us are claiming to have been banned from your site AFAIK, although I think a number of BBs are claiming to have been banned from here. Admin has shown this to be incorrect however.

Opinated idiots? How ironic :D

This is actually incorrect. In the UK you CANNOT make a backup of a DVD, even if you own it.

edit: Sorry neo, don't want to sound like I'm starting on you, just pointing out :)

Its the other way around mate, people on your site claim to have been banned from here, which hasn't happened.
