Hi All,

When returning to my car a couple of times recently I have noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine bay, I then proceed to unlock the car and try to start it and it won’t turn over and the immobiliser light stays on. However I then come back to it after a little while and it starts first time with no issue and the ticking is gone.

Any idea of how to stop this from happening?

Cheers,
Alex

Hi Alex,

is that ticking noise coming without doing anything ? Once, twice, more, permanent ??

Hi Bernie,

It has only happened a couple of times but when it does happen the noise is permenant, even when I’m away from the car and it’s locked. The only way to stop it seems to be to disconnect the battery and leave it for half an hour, then come back and reconnect it and it’s fine.

Yeah I’ve tried, not too sure where it’s coming from tho, sounds like it’s deep in the engine bay on the left hand side of the engine

Left-hand side when you face the car? If it's a diesel that's where the glow-plug control unit is located (attached to the firewall). On this side, there are also the alternator and the AC compressor with its magnetic clutch, plus potentially some actuators (Variable Vane Turbo, Variable Valve Timing, Gas Vapour Recycler).
Nothing that you can really disconnect to proceed with troubleshooting (but the AC clutch)...

I'd recommend to perform the very well known earth cable jump-lead test, that seems to be the very first thing to do on GPs having electrical gremlins ...
