General Gear box

Had a whining/rumbling noise from the car (Punto 16V ELX 2002), so into the local garage (trustworthy chap). He tells me it is the gear box and it needs replacing with a cost of around £550. Are gear boxes problems common on the Punto?

my sister had exactly the same problem... she went to about 3/4 garages and they all quoted about the £500... but luckily she knew someone who could do it for £250 i know thats no help to you but i think it is a common fault on the mk2 punto's

Little tip, ask your local garages on a quote for how much it would be to actually rebuild the gearbox, as thats wot my local garage did for about 300 quid on mine, cheaper than replacing it

I wouldn't replace it until it breaks down completly. It can make another 50.000km or more. Mine is making strange noises since I got the car 40.000km ago
