Hi all

I couldn't find a thread that helped with my query so I thought I'd start a new one.

I am a new driver with no technical knowledge at all so please bare with the basic terminology. The fiat garage have proved useless and I'm not sure where to turn next.

I have an 08 panda dynamic 1.2 automatic 38,000 miles on the clock. I'm the second owner, had the car since March, nothing major in it's history, no real work ever done one it.

12 days ago I lost the use of the automatic gear box, warning light came on and message on dash saying automatic function failed. I could still use the manual function of the gear box and managed to get to a safe place to stop. Turned it off and on again and all had return to normal.

The following day the same thing happened, lose of automatic function then loss of all gear box function. Car not responding to gear changes at all. Limped into car park pulled to a stop and then car would not move from that point. Gearbox and transmission warning light on, rev counter and temp gauge flicking all over the place, odometer flashing.

RAC came out ran diagnostic and said there was a CAM fault (I have no idea what that means). Car was taken to Fiat who had it five days and told me there was nothing wrong. Diagnostic test showed nothing, all checks seemed ok. They did nothing to it and was running fine when they received it (why that took five days I'm not sure).

5 days later exactly the same thing happened. RAC towed back to Fiat who again can't find anything wrong with it. Suggested there way be a loose connection some where but didn't offer a solution.

Yesterday exactly the same thing happened again. RAC out for the third time. Whilst trying to connect his computer under the dash, everything suddenly fixed itself. Car moving, gear box working, warning lights all gone. RAC said pointless going back to Fiat (I think I agree) and that there is a possible a lose connection to the fuse box. All he did was wiggle the bundle of wires and everything was sorted. His suggestion was to take the car to an automatic electrical specialist, hours on the internet hasn't shed any light on where I can find one of these.

Car running ok today until coming home and the same thing has happened again. I wiggled the wires and things seemed to rectify themselves but who knows if the car is going anywhere tomorrow.

I don't know where to turn next to try and fix the problem. Have spoken to Fiat today who said it would be to difficult to find a loose connection as could be anywhere. But there must be some one somewhere who can help me. I have a two year old and am terrified of driving with her in the car now in case something happens on a busy road and I cause an accident.

There is no pattern as to when it happens, type of weather, etc. The RAC man suggested that I just need to get on with it and that I'm being overly cautious because I'm a new driver but I really am at the stage where I just don't feel safe in the car. If any one has had the same trouble and fixed it or has any advice please let me know.

Thanks very much

Check yell.com for auto electricians in your area, they won't have to be a 'automatic' specialist or anything like that just need to know what they are doing, could be something as simple as a dodgy earth which can be fixed in a few seconds. Its having someone who knows where to start
