and its not a competition.

Its not a competition

if you want figures then Norfolk has
1773 cases, Dorset has 340

Turns it into a competition.

As people in other parts of the forum has pointed out, the actual straight number doesn't mean anything on its own, it is more a percentage of the population. In this instance we are not talking about the number of cases we are talking about the number of deaths. So while you may want to turn it into some sort of Dorset Versus Norfolk competition (clearly not happy with the comments in the article I had posted) the fact remains that Norwich has the lowest number of deaths as a percentage of its population.

here is the quote from the ONS

"Of the 111 major towns and cities, the highest age-standardised mortality rate was in Salford, with a rate of 112.6 deaths per 100,000 population. The lowest rate was 4.9 deaths per 100,000 population in Norwich."

Here is the page from which that information was noted https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopula...vation/deathsoccurringbetween1marchand17april

Norwich has a reasonably high population, and is about 30th of the list of biggest towns and cities in the UK. Meaning there are 80+ smaller towns and cities in those statistics which have a higher death rate by comparison.

whether or not you agree with it being posted in the press is irrelevant as the press will literally just report anything at the moment

I would argue that this isn't any more dangerous as a news story then many others that get posted on a daily basis.

oh how you make me laugh
I am talking about poor reporting in the press, you're the one on about numbers

note the difference in how to report and still maintain the importance of the lockdown

with only x number of deaths we have the lowest numbers of mortality in the country
or
it is sad to report their have been x number of fatalities a reminder of how important it is to maintain social distance etc....…..

or are you going to get the last word in again...…….

Interesting stuff. going on an offshoot direction. One said the virus mutated. In the science world, I have a question.
Does anyone know one thing that has mutated, and gained genetic information? I have heard mutations only lose genetic information.

oh how you make me laugh

I'll come back to this.

I am talking about poor reporting in the press, you're the one on about numbers

Now this is what is known as a Straw man fallacy or argument.

The original statement was about the low death rate being reported in Norwich, to which your original and exact reply was "not sure on that one"

think it is fair to say beyond all reasonable doubt that I have provided adequate information to back the news article up.
That argument and what you where refuting was very much one of numbers. (y)

Now you claim what you are arguing all along was poor reporting in the press, and that this was your argument all along and that you have somehow won that argument (you stake this claim by making comments about having to have the last word). Except the reporting in the press is accurate and truthful so I don't see how you can say it was "poor reporting"
You seemingly do not agree with the story and you have an opinion about whether or not they should report it. However it is data that is in the public domain for all to see. Anyone can go to the ONS website and see that data. so in light of your belief that reporting this data is some how dangerous, would appear to go against the government's belief that it should be reported as it was the government who reported it in the first place. So... why is it "poor reporting" to put that information out in the media?

I'm not taking the story on anything more than face value and its clear you have not read the article. The article concentrates on what the health services in the area is doing differently to other areas and what can be learned from this area to improve outcomes in other areas. The tone of the article is very much on the importance of continuing to maintain social distancing and self isolation, I essence, Norwich does it better than other places other places should do what Norwich does.

You're arguing yourself in circles because you didn't read the article, you just took offence because it contradicted something you believed to be true.

Throwing in the comment about "having to have the last word" is not going to make be suddenly back down. In fact the way in which you are doing this is to dare me to once again challenge your points. "do you dare have the last word or concede that I am correct" well in this instance you are arguing with yourself about a point I never made.
My point still stands, Norwich has the lowest rate of deaths by population, the evidence is clear to see, this is posted on a government website. Everything else you've had to say about it is your opinion of which I am not arguing, if that's your opinion, super, I am however asking, if the government don't believe this information to be "dangerous" why do you?

This back and forth however does not change the original fact nor your initial response to it..... "not sure on that one" well its there in black and white.

.........oh how you make me laugh?

Virus are nifty things. They can't replicate on their own, are simply carriers of DNA and a parcel enough to jijak a host cells machinery in order to spread. As such they can combine with elements of DNA from other virus, or shed some, in an alarming way if you think about it too much. The flag for the immune response is the nature of protein on their package, so to speak, and that would be controlled by a relative handful of genes which may or may not mutate. Its a numbers game and our species are remarkably good at hitting them.
Interesting stuff. going on an offshoot direction. One said the virus mutated. In the science world, I have a question.

I've got better things to do than read your made up arguments about nothing, obviously you are so far up your own back side as not to see the light in front of your face.

once again the thread has become a waste of time...thanks and goodbye.

Do the virus decide what they do? what is needed to do? How does this work?

Off subject, but close. Lets look at the giraffe. They have a sponge type at the base of the scull. This way when they lower the head it softens the blood impact and break the brain. Then when they lift the head it releases blood to the brain so it does not pass out. This part is fact, science that is observable, repeatable...

Question comes. How did the giraffe first learn it needed the sponge. How did it be born, if the parents did not have it. Did it come from a different animal. If it did, then how did a breed pair be made at the same time and same place? All dna never gains genetic information only looses it. All dogs came from a wolf type species. they lost genetic information in breeding with other dogs. Micro evolution. Short hair dog information survived better in hot climates then in cold environments. Thus this is basic of how breeding within the same species changes dna.

I am not a scientist, and neither are you. This should be interesting to see. Will it be like a dentist that touches a sore tooth? we will see by the squealing.

I believe mutations of viruses are due to gene pairings or gene loses or both.

From what I understand, in simplistic terms, when a virus replicates it can make mistakes which can lead to losing some of it's genes and/or pairing genes in a different order.
(Yes, if it loses genes they are gone, but the original virus might be still out there and still got those genes.)

This makes the replicated virus different from the original in some way, either good, bad or neutral (the most common mutation).

So this could be for the good or bad for either virus or host and if the original virus is wide spread enough it doesn't just stop and the new mutation takes over, so now you end up with both on the loose, which I think was documented earlier on in the European outbreak.
The mutated D614G seems the prevalent one in Europe and America at the moment, but that doesn't mean D614 has vanished completely.

From the reports from Arizona and Los Alamos, it seems both have detected one mutation of each type, one with different gene pairings (the proteins that makeup the Spike) that may have made the virus easier to infiltrate cells and one that has lost some of these gene pairing that used to help it infiltrate cells.
This lost gene mutation was something they also noticed in the SARS outbreak in 2002, so it wasn't unexpected.

Someone pointed out to me today, that though this virus is very very good at replicating it's self, very quickly, so far it's thought it's about 50 times slower at mutating than 'flu, which does help the vaccine research as it's not changing to rapidly.

What don't you understand by I DON'T DOUBT the figures'?
BUT PUBLISHING THIS INFORMATION IS DANGEROUS :bang:
with this information and the bank holiday (why are we still having them?)and potential for easing of the lockdown will give a false sense of security and that second dreaded wave will happen, if you want figures then Norfolk has
1773 cases, Dorset has 340

surely if you think someone miss understood you you could have explained what you meant better without resorting to calling someone an arse.

I hope and pray that for my 60th birthday on Tuesday i will be able to hug my grandchildren.

AND

When we get back to a sort of near normal life (ok normal was the problem in the first place) i hope all the politicians and everyone else dont get involved in debating what should and shouldn`t have been done etc etc , please all try and pull together, help one another ..... ok you get my drift ........ and look and plan incase anything like this or worse happens again.

My grandma used say charity begins at home

Take care everyone ,god bless

they have to though so if it happens again we can see what we should and should not do, to make things better.

My grandma used say charity begins at home

My dad used to say that, he was a tight sod and didn't like to give his money to any charities.

I know how it used to work, if a thread started to have loads of off topic stuff appearing in by 2 or 3 people that content would be split out by super mods into a new thread to keep everybody happy.

It seems impossible to keep everybody happy. No matter what is done, there always seems to be someone ready to be unhappy and wishing to share their unhappiness with everyone else.
Perhaps a thread each might sort it?:D

Charity begins at home...... Clarification

I mean lets look after the UK , let hope people can pull together ( ok i know what your gonna say )

However or whatever caused this pandemic is open for great debate still ,but lets not waste time and money on what we cant do anthing about ,lets focus on family friends and neighbours etc etc and working together

ok i`ll move to Fantasy island !!!! but time will tell

Happy VE DAY everyone , stay safe

The virus has thrown up many stories & we all have a story. My father died in 2007 & my two sisters practically stopped communication with me after that time, nothing bad, we are in different parts of the country & just became lazy. Yesterday I received a large envelope from my oldest sister with a small note and photographs when I was a baby/child/teenager & various parts of my life before I met my wife. Bloody hell due to the situation & me being a big Jessie the older I get, I was a bit emotional... Not that bad but I looked at the wee lad I once was & thought what the hell happened to the years.

My generation have savoured times that will no longer be available to the young team probably never, is the only way I can put things & that is very sad. It's hard to explain & some will not understand, but it really was a different time back in my youth even ignoring the rose glasses.

My fantastic old neighbour died at 94..having had a VERY full life.

He was a railwayman.. shovelled 1.5 tons of coal a day
In the 40's and 50's they stopped the train at level crossings and signal boxes daily..
To drop 'milkchurns'.. full of drinking water

The railway came to swathes of land where Nobody had settled.. remote places with no running water

Nowadays nobody would take a job there..
No mobile signal and no broadband

Let’s be honest, my first mobile was 1998 and definitely didn’t do internet stuff, I think the first internet phone I had was “Wap” in about 2001 and it wasn’t till circa 2007/8 that proper smart phones appeared so realistically you’re harking back to a day that was maybe 10 years ago? We had broadband 10 years ago but it was slow and no ones phone connected to it!
