Technical bloomfieldliam's brake overhaul

Back on topic, went out tonight to bleed the brakes.

Started with rally's gravity method but was only getting fluid at one corner, maybe it takes a while but I'm getting a loan of a car just now and I am outstaying my welcome I think so decided to do it with the one way valve tube thingy.

Now I dunno if I've hit disaster or not but fluid wasn't that forthcoming from any nipple, yeah I got some but not the amount I expected, I've put in over 500ml and maybe got 50-100ml in my old milk carton.

So I done all the nipples in the Haynes sequence and tighten them all up and the pedal is spongey, why is nothing simple on these cars? Not too chuffed so called it a night.

feeling your pain lol.
my experience of the one way bleed thing wasnt good since it exploded into the bottle after a couple of bleeds so a waste of money/time there.
fitting rear shoes on mine tomorrow so i'll see hwat surprises await me under the drums.
moved the turbo in the car park today and the brakes work so im assuming its just air giving me the spongey pedel

Quick update, car is at a garage today to get the hub fixed to take my spacer bolts and it is getting bled up cos I couldn't do it! Had to drive up there with no brakes, was "interesting" lets just say!

The studs I bought are all wrong well kind of, the back and fronts are too short so I am going to but the front's on the back and get longer front bolts, the nuts only screw in half way.

The new wheels are bloody huge, not much clearance in the arches but they look damn sexy, driving could be interesting.

lol you wimp ;) though im bleeding mine today and am tempted to do the sme if it doesnt improve

Got the car back, brakes don't feel quite right going by others comments, pedal firms up with engine off as it should but the brakes don't bite till the pedal goes halfway down.

Mine have been like that ever since my brake troubles started, I just live with it but for others that isn't an option.

Think there might still be air in there, will try to get a free rebleed this week.

Forgot to add there that my fuel gauge isn't working anymore, must be something connection wise under the inspection plate or the car just needs flung around abit.

on the turbo cinq dodgy brakes are a no no

Yeah mine are still good enough to stop my underpowered death sled, even in moments of Corsa GSi passes in a 30mph zone, cop comes round corner and Corsa Gsi nob slams on brakes right in front of me.

Im having the same problem as you with my rear uno turbo brakes conversion that ive done over the weekend.

with engine off i can pump the pedel to make more pressure foot goes straight to floor at 1st, about 8 pumps later it goes solid about half way down.

with engine on well thats a different story, i push peddle down, no resistance what so ever brakes dont slow me down, a quick 2 or 3 pumps and it builds pressure up but its no good incase i have to brake sharply :( car still goes forward, my front brakes do the same also so i have no stopping power on 1st pedel push i have to pump my brakes to stop :(

bled them with about 1.5litres of dot 4 fluid, but nothing :(

going to take it garage tomorrow to see what they can say about this.

i will post a guide up with step by step pics and instructions later on this week,

very easy conversion i also done my last rear power flex bush too :D (bitchin things to do)

firstly please for the love of god dont drive with dodgy brakes, if not for your car then the car infront, if anyone smashed into my car becuase their brakes wern't up to scratch i'd be having serious words, lots of which starting with f :D

secondly, wow everyone having brake woes at the mo lol :D

horrendous luck here lol.
well i have so far
new master cylinder
some new pipes
full set calipers, pads and discs on the front
braided hoses front only so far
new rear shoes
4 metric tonnes of brake fluid ;)

so im running out of brake parts and more to the point money and patience.

R5 gt is looking more attractive every day :chin:

You need to do what Alex needs to do - bleed the calipers with them unbolted, bleed nipples facing completely up. Take the pads out, and pump the piston out pretty much as far as it will go (not too far so piston falls out..) then push it back in with a G clamp with the bleed nipple open. Do this a couple of times on each caliper.

Then all should be fine :) The problem comes where the bleed nipple isnt at the top of the cylinder, so you can bleed as much as you want, but it wont get rid of all the air in the system as it sits in pockets above the bleed nipple. By taking the caliper off and bleeding it manually with the bleed nipple facing totally up, the air has no choice but to escape (y)

Custard, whats wrong with your brakes?

Fuel guage sprung into life this morning which was good, must've been the way I sat the tank for a bit.

Pedal not great but getting used to it, will see if I can get it better mid week.

Just a thought. Fitting bigger brakes and keeping the standard master cylinder, if the pistons are bigger than standard then you will need to move more fluid to get the same amount of movement at the piston.

Cheers
