Guys and Gals,

Quick question, i've assumed this is normal but never checked!! my 100hp will hit the limiter at 6500rpm for the first time if i havent driven it hard for a while, and will then go to 7k after that, however if i drive it hard day in day out this wont happen. Do anyone else get this? i presume its's normal! :p

Cheers!

Mine has always found the limiter at around 7100rpm.

Don't see why the limiter would come in earlier, it's not like BMW's surely that have a moving rev limiter depending upon how warm the engine is.

Normally the Rev limiter is kicking in at 7000RPM.
With an upgraded ECU(chiptuning) it will be 7200RPM.
6500 RPM is only the redline, the limiter is set at a little RPM's more.

Like Trackdayqueen said there is no variable revlimiter.
Even not when you're in neutral. Like the newer 8-cylinder BMW engines.
When the car is in neutral the revlimiter kicks in at 4000RPM.

Some cars have a lower rpm limit until they're fully warmed up (although anyone thrashing a cold engine needs their head examined IMHO). The Toyota 2ZZ-GE VVT engines have this safety feature (found in Celica's and later Elises/Exiges).

I don't think the ECU on the 100hp is that advanced so doubt this is the case with your query.

My one is standard and definately goes past 7000rpm. I would estimate that it's 7100 or 7200.

Having a different limiter when cold probably wouldn't cost them much or be difficult. It would probably just be a few lines of code, all the hardware is probably there.

Yeah but limiting to 6.5k instead of 7k rpm isn't going offer much in the way of protection to a cold engine so I doubt this is what's being experienced by the OP (as a comparison the toyota ecu limits at 5.5k rpm until the engine temp is above a certain level as opposed to 8800rpm).

When I referred to the 100hp ecu as being basic I meant that it hasn't got to control any variable valve timing trickery or even knock sensors etc.

Yes I do!

www.madeno.nl
Click on road performance then click Fiat...

They dyno the car before and after.
And they will customise the software per car.
Beacause each car is different.

And the second is.

www.mccsport.nl
They offer the same kit from Madeno, only it is cheaper.
This is because they don't do the dyno's and custom tuning...

The software is developed for a nice powerband.
It does not have a big dip in it.
So torque and horsepower are increased.
They claim somwere around +10 hp.
Also they will upgrade the throttle response to very agressive.
So the sportmode from a untuned 100Hp will be the off mode in the new setting.

Max HP is being reached @ 5800RPM instead of 6000RPM.
The powerband will stay around that kind of horsepower until 6500RPM.

The car has rev limiter at 6500 when has zero miles on the clock and when the car moves has rev limiter on 7000! Try it.....

Guys, never said anything about it being cold... if i explain again, if i say do the usual commute to work, 25 mins, never get above 5k usually, for say a week, the next time i rev the car to the limiter it will cut in at 6500, if i then went to the limiter again it will go to 7 or just over 7. However if i hit the limiter every day or every other this will never happen and it will always go to 7. I assumed the ecu may have some learning capability and be able to adjust to optimise mpg or performance, however if no-one else gets this something can't be right!!! I did have a telling off from Fiat after the car went in for a 3rd gear syncromesh fault due to the amount of times i had hit the limiter (they can obviously see this info so the ecu can't be that simple!) i wonder if its something they could have done...

My Vivaro Van will not rev past 3000rpm in neutral... With all the sensors on modern engines, software to limit rpm through sensor reading would not be hard or indeed expensive to write. Don't see how it being a fiat would make any difference TBH.

What do you mean you don't hit the redline on a weekly basis? :p

Having always done this I've never known an issue.

I do not understand how hitting the limiter would affect the syncromesh. That makes no sense.

I don't think there's an implied connection - just a reason for taking the car in to the dealer, where a mechanic looked at the ecu readout and noticed the rev limiter "violations".

You've reminded me that I need to give my dealer a nudge about resolving the 3rd gear synchro issues.

Lol.. well, i used to, but 44000 miles down the line i seem to have mellowed some what, partly due to knowing i'll have the car way above 80k.. don't want to break it.. saying that i've just got back from a drive i went on for no reason other than to thrash it to the best of my abilities. life is good :D

Yea as said there wasn't a direct link between the limiter and the syncromesh, it was just that i'd probably had the car 6 months and turns out i'd hit the limiter 260 odd times.. i didnt use to do it on purpose tbh but it pulls right to 7 so i used to just change up bang on the limiter.. i guess Fiat just didn't like it and decided by driving was partially to blame, which i wasn't happy about, not like mines the only one to have an issue with 3rd gear syncro!! Still they did it under warranty so nothing more was said..

Anyway.. photo whoring opp.. best do the members cars thing..
