General 100hp Turbo conversion

Thanks @koalar

Yes, I have a 1.3MJ running a smidge over 140hp.

There used to be a company in Portugal that sold a complete kit 140hp kit, but don't think they're around anymore.

Although 140hp isn't a lot in today's world......with the interior stripped out, I've got it under the 700kg mark......so performance is comparable with a 280hp family saloon size car.

As well as the engine work, it also required an updated gearbox, suspension, brakes and 16" wheels.

Bought it with 70k on the clock, work done at 80k, and currently at 178k with no major issues.

I also have a Cinquecento with a forged T-jet conversion......but that's purely for track use.....not practical or likely legal to run on the road.

If I do get round to doing anything about an up-rated Panda it'll only be to use up stuff I've already accumulated or cast-offs from my son's project.
I'm a bit wrinkly to pass as a boy-racer, and I can't wear a baseball cap backwards. I can even let myself get out-dragged by pimplies in hatchbacks with dustbin-sized exhausts when driving a VXR (Holden HSV for those who don't know), so I'm probably not the correct demographic any more.

Who cares! OLD GUYS RULE. Get your retro ride going again! and enjoy it's never to late! As long as the Misses agrees of course! 🤗

I suggest you get an Abarth 500, with a stage whatever tune, and get the performance urge out of your system.
You can then decide to swap the whole mechanicals and electrics over if you really want to.

It wouldn't be a Panda Abarth then!? Im building what Fiat should of done!;)

Im also toying with the Abarth 500 front badge going on some how!?

Don't buy a non-runner! Hear it running, and listen carefully for the "misfire of doom" as well as the usual unwanted engine noises.
Most spares cars seem to have been driven like they were stolen from owners who avoided routine servicing, by illiterate apes wearing diving boots.
They are susceptible to over-rev damage, bad maintenance and "improvements".
We managed to get hold of one with front end damage which had been maintained properly by the previous owner, and only survived a couple of thousand miles with the new owner before they stacked it. Luckily the damage was limited to mostly expensive 595-specific parts we didn't need.
We rejected 3 or 4 before that one though as they looked like trouble.

140bhp from a 1.3 multijet is HOW MUCH !!! What did you do to get that figure?

Mine is still the standard 70 bhp that can remap to 95bhp. 70 bhp is more than enough for local use and even motorways. However, it really shows up on fast A-roads. The car feels eager to overtake then just fails to deliver. Not much fun, but what do I expect its only 70 bhp! The other issue is the refusal to go at low revs. It's electronically neutered below 2000 rpm.

I fancy fitting the 100HP six speed gearbox. HOWEVER I suspect the torque rating is on the low side so a lead foot below 2000rpm on a remapped engine could soon get expensive. It would also need the Multijet final drive gears. Who knows if they are a direct swap. I don't fancy buying a Multijet gearbox only to find the parts wont work in the 100HP six speed box.

On my VWT4 the 5th gear can be replaced just buy taking the end plate off of the gearbox. I wonder if a similair thing can be done with the Pandar

I checked out the gear ratios. They are the same but the final drive is higher on the diesel. The six speed had virtually the same speed range but in six steps and avoids that nasty gap between 2nd and 3rd.

Theres an SLK supercharge for £60 near me. Im still liking this idea

It's up to you, it's your car

Theres lots of little problems,.but nothing insurmountable

Such as the pulley is laminated, will it take the strain, they do fail anyhow

As far as I know the boost in the slk is controlled by electromagnetic clutch controlled by the ECU, there no way to control it via the pandas ECU,

It's a 11.1 compression ratio,.port injection, limits the amount of boost on standard pump petrol to very low with very little margins for error

In the last 30 years of the 1.4L 16V N/A I would have thought someone would have independently Dyno tested one with meaningful gains

Don't forget in good running condition they normally make around 108-110 before anything is done

The way everything is so integrated, you would need (at least) the electric modules or the whole loom if the Panda connectors are not compatible. You might be able to use the 500 front subframe and suspension. The front strut top mount locations are probably incompatible and when they are sorted you'll have tyre clearance issues. Not insurmountable but more work.

At least both cars have an easy to remove dash panel. Not to be confused with the dash under frame structure, which as a MUCH bigger job.

I wish i had expendable funds to try this https://torqamp.com/dyno-runs/fiat-panda-100hp/ Looks very interesting with decent gains (But hefty price tag)
I could be way off the mark, I have never fitted or tried a torqamp, I know nothing about the company

I have seen an independent rolling road of one of these hair dryers fitted on a 2.2L it made an extra 20HP when on but lost 10HP when off, whether it was fitted correctly I can't say

Run time is 4 minutes which is plenty, in my opinion

Electric supercharger aren't new they have been around since the 1990s

I can't see how the maths add up with a 0.4 bar boost that can reach 155bhp

The Fiat Bravo t-jet is 150 bhp max, I believe at over twice the boost

If it was 100% efficient it would be 140 BHP

Personal a would like to see some truly independent results before shelling out €2,749.00

I agree, i'm always dubious about self quoted figures from these companies. If you're reading Torqamp i'm happy to be your guinea pig 😘
