Hi

Looking to get my clutch sorted just wondering what prices I should expect for a clutch with fitting.

Replace the gearbox input shaft bearing while it's apart. They are known for failing. It's not a difficult job with the box already off the car. Perhaps another hour of labour cost.

Is it something you recommend on doing on the 1.8 aswell ? I worked as a mechanic for 5 years and never replaced the inner bearing of the input shaft while doing a clutch job. Seals maybe, yea.

Hi

Well after getting loads of quotes from £168 to £500+ I am now getting a good mobile mechanic to fit the clutch £150 Labour and the clutch kit a Valeo one £50 so £200 in total did not want the hassle of cheaper clutch kits taking the chance.

Around 2 hours in a proper workshop

;)

I cannot even imagine how that is possible. Even if they come with wheel hub nuts and strut nuts and it all comes apart easily how can it be done in 2 hours without one underneath one at each wheel and one at the top?

Takes me about an hour just to get the wheels off and the car raised, lower the car and put the wheels on. :)

Proper workshop (y)

Vehicle at chest height

Parts are all in front of you..

Realistically there are @40 bolts to gain access:
Wheel and strut
Starter
Slave cylinder
Gearbox

A trolley to carry the gearbox..
Tools to centre the clutch parts

Clean,dry and simple

The mobile mechanic is charging for 3 hours laid on their back in the street ;)

How did it go getting it replaced by the Mobile Mechanic? - I was really surprised you said he only charged £150 - I'd have thought a Mobile Mechanic might have charged more then a garage as he's coming to you?

I just paid £250 to get mine changed at a local garage + the cost of the clutch which I bought from EuroCarParts about £40 for a LUK Clutch

Mobile garage probably has 1/5 of the overhead costsw of a workshop

A garage will factor in all of the 'overheads' into an inflated hourly rate
Typically @£70

The guy in a transit will probably be @£40

A guy around here has concreted his front garden..has 4 vehicles a day.. and charges £20

£20 to replace the entire clutch? How long does the work actually take per car?

Is the person retired and just doing it to keep himself busy?
