General Punto mystery problem.

Ok finally got my car back from the bodyshop so im able to start checking faults again with this.

Drove back from luton to brum with no problems which i was grateful for!

However this morning upon start it shot out a bunch of white smoke out the exhaust and was misfiring badly on the way to work!

Any thoughts?

White clouds from the exhaust are either oil smoke or water/steam. Oil usually has a blueish tinge and if its that visible would smell of burning oil.

Every litre of petrol makes another litre of water that exits the exhaust as steam so on cold damp days it will "smoke" on startup but quickly clears as the engine and exhaust heat up.

If the car is making a lot of white smoke and the coolant level is dropping and there are signs of adjacent cylinders showing lower compression the odds are the head gasket has failed.

If the original leak that caused it to fail last time has not been fixed the chances are the coolant level has dropped (as before) and damaged the new gasket.

If the "smoke" smells like coolant tank does when its hot then you certainly have a blown head gasket or a cracked head casting as that's the only way for coolant to get into the exhaust.

it is 100 % the chip on the distributor, costs around 70 euros, that is all the problem.
very difficult to detect cos its intermittant and shows signs as if misfiring, and will show more frequently if accellaration is abrubt. 2 brands for that chip, magneti marelli or a french one forgot its name. If you live in Italy they would have changed it for you in no time its really easy to dedect because that is the only weak point a FIRE fiat engine with injection has from running smoothly, other than that they are bullet proof!

right i posted in tech talk with no reply so ill try here.

My engine keeps randomly misfiring whilest driving along.

The engine will be fine then suddenly misfire for about 20 seconds and then will clear itself and will be fine fine for a while until it happens again.

i took it on the motorway for along longish drive and it seemed to pretty much die completely after a while. But after leaving it on the drive for a couple of hours it seemed ok again.

Ive had a head gasket, water pump, termostat, oil filter, cambelt, new leads, plugs, coilpacks, lamda sensors and cat about 100 miles ago so i am baffled.

Any engine boffins got any advice as it would be greatly appriciated.

just sat and read all pages of this thread and there a few different oppinion's so with the pressure difference between some cylinders being over 15 psi this is the most likely cause, this would cause a misfire and engine to run on three all cyliners should be within 10psi my gt reads 144 149 142 150. and the underlying problem could be a warped head or block u said that the head was skimmed was it inspected for cracks don't forget under heat and pressure that a hair line crack would open and even leak may be a shot in dark but when was last time u got injectors cleaned when on idle put your fingers on them to see if there pulsing correctly one may be faulty or blocked and could be cause of first gasket failure hope this helps

only just checked the tread again guys......
some various opinions here and dont know what to do.

I have replaced the cam sensor and crank sensor today and still plays up.

Like i said before i have ran some injector cleaner through it very recently, also got a stethoscope onto the injectors to have a listen to the pulse, one seems weaker than the others but only slightly.

that one about the distributor chip or something sounded promising but looks like a false lead. i have noticed that if i am careful with my acceleration and just feather it everywhere my problems are reduced and dont occur as often dont know what that could mean?

next thing to try is a new inlet with injectors etc

any other thoughts? this is proving to be a right bastard to diagnose!

your compressions are unbalanced
whether this would cause your problem probably not
i would get an emmisions test done see if hc is high pointing to a h/g issue
get a vacuum guage on it and see what it does with regards sticky valves reading ideally should be 18 rock steady
you say new plugs fitted but even new plugs can be faulty
finally you say you fitted new crank and cam sensers but i assume you just plugged into the existing loom connectors
had an issue a few months back where these wires were picking up erronious signals from other electrics and causing drop out to the ecu, changed these cables by cutting out at a scrappies and resoldering in and fault cured

of course if you could take the car to a man that could do live data he would probably find your fault in minutes but look at all my suggestions please

Moral:
NEVER use unproven used sensors. If its old its likely to be just as c**p as your own old part

BTW. Valves if they stick (very very rare unless bent) jam open so you little or no compression.
