Great Wall Motors of China have begun production of their “Peri” model. As you can see from the photos, many parts are identical to Fiat’s Panda:mad:. Fiat is aware of this “Copyright infringement” and is taking legal action, however Great Wall remains defiant and is marketing this model in China. The Chinese even have plans to bring this car to Europe! What’s worrying is that it will cost less than Fiat’s Panda, which could affect Fiat sales!

Take a look at the photos and you'll see why Fiat aren't happy...

It's Chinese! There's nothing in the world that would make me want a Chinese car... They've never scored well on safety.

The outside is slightly different, rear 3/4 and Nissan Note rear lights but the inside is exactly the same:eek:

Exactly - it's a Fiat Panda in disguise and shows lack of imagination and respect. Why should they be allowed to benefit from Fiat's hard work? They have basically reverse engineered a Fiat Panda. If there is any justice, they should be prevented from producing this copy as they are breaking copyright law. This is not the first and probably won’t be the last. The Chinese have had numerous copyright disputes with other global car manufacturers!

how many ncap stars it get though? that other chineese 4x4 thing we see had none

I don't think it's been crash tested by NCAP yet, although i can't see it doing better than Panda... it's built by chinese :p

*article about that zero 4x4 here

The interior is quite funky in the beige colour, I like that... much nicer than the very dark grey Fiat now have.
The outside is fugly as sin and it will be pants.
But, they are only doing what the Japanese did in the 50s and 60s, copying the western world. The Japs made exact copies of bikes from the UK and the rest of Europe, and early Toyotas were very similar to yanks cars of the 50s.
But on the flipside, the Italians copied a Honda bike engine in the 70s and plonked it in a Benelli...
In a few years time they will be eveywhere these Chinese cars and no doubt other manufacurers will suffer losses and potential closures, one day their cars may well be good too.

Why not take the copying as a compliment? I personally don't agree with copy-catting, but hey if the Panda was crap then they wouldn't have copied it in the first place!

I doubt that very much. Chinese cars have never been good so what makes you think they will take over the automotive industry:confused:

Yes but in actual fact it’s not a compliment when they sell cheaper in Europe and steal Panda sales. How can Fiat take that as a compliment? The Chinese can sell cheap because their quality standards are bad. This may not matter to buyers in Europe if it’s very cheap.

the problems arise when the copy is put to the test...we've all seen the landwind ncap crash test, and that was a much bigger car. to have what fiat fear is a massively inferior and poorly developed identicar roaming the streets side by side with its baby would be unbearable.

also you could i suppose use the argument the entertainment industry has used for years re "stolen sales, dropping revenue for original product so less money for new product" cycle, if everyone goes out and buys a knockoff, at anything up to 50% of an established brand, what are we left with? a very busy time for a&e, as well as undertakers (lets face it if your happy to put carcinogens on kids toys.....), the established makers deciding on longer lifecycles for exsisting product, as any real investment will be destroyed by a copy within a year or two. the downwards spiral begins.....

true, but I drive a real panda and that will fall to bits, worse than any chinese new car in a crash:) Ill be honest, the last thing Im interested in is NCAP ratings as are many drivers. I dont go out to crash and Im not buying a five star one just in case I do! However, in the areas I am interested in i.e. design, finish and reliability, comfort and above all fun... the chinese car will be pants:)
If this chinky panda is say 2k cheaper than a proper one, then Fiat will have to lower prices, it just has to be good for competition.

thats exactly what the British car industry said of the Japanese in the 1970s, lets not let that happen again in Europe:(

I respect the Japanese for their quality standards and innovation. The Chinese however, work differently, which is a great shame. They don't deserve to become major players in the car industry.
