Panda (Classic) Project Fallout

Introduction

let me introduce to you, the free panda 4x4 which was first spotted >>Here<<.
First off however, here is the plan:

i will (some how) make the panda look "Post Apocalyptic" yet keep it in a road legal state (so no spikes, sharp rusty edges sadly). We have all seen mad max right? all wanted to replicate a mad max style car?
well let me be the first to attempt this with a fiat panda 4x4.

if anyone here has seen the TV program "Defiance", you surely have seen the epic Doge Charger that looks post apocalyptic. i will be trying to aim for the same theme. with such things as an external roll cadge, external metal mesh / grills covering the windows, custom bull bar, reinforced rear bumper made from tubular metal, custom twin output exhaust, and many many more.

this project is going to be undertaken as cheaply as possible (excluding parts necessary for a safe road going vehicle). reusing as many things as i can find (in scrap yards, freebees), true to a real post apocalyptic constructed vehicle. i will also be taking the "rough is best look" (please note, i say Rough not Rat!) the panda its self of course will undergo all the rust prevention Talon went under when i got him.

anyway, i will leave you a few seconds to build up a mental picture of how a panda 4x4 could look in a post apocalyptic landscape while browsing some of these Pictures.......

ok.. that should do.

First off. i need to get the panda all well and good.
a few things are broken... the exhaust, the front suspension on the passenger side, both rear dampeners are rusted out, the doors are shot but i will try to fix them, the gear stick is really loose and all the roller bearings have dropped out, the wiring is a mess (mice attack!), there are no brakes.. and i mean no brakes, and lets not forget the underside rust.

so today i started by stripping out everything inside the car to get a good look at the floor pan and clean it all out (Dragon Man style!) i found the usual rust: the boot floor is a mess, but easy fixable, a seam has gone just behind the drivers seat anything forward of that seems to be OK, and the back of the sills are just gone so i will need to rebuild that.

the engine runs.. the vac advance line has split so its a bit rough on tickover but it seems good. the fuel tank seems good.. all the 4x4 stuff seems good.

i have go a few pictures took free by a professional photographer! (or should i say someone with an epic camera :p)

Here are a few picture, but please check out >This Album<

like i say, check out the photo album.

i will be keeping >Online video logs< of this, so keep a look out on Youtube too.
here are some videos, both are long but the second one is longer!

keep watching guys.. the jet wash will be coming out later today!

Edit:

This is how it looks now: :eek::eek: :slayer::slayer::slayer:

took.. err.. hammered the back bumper off today. damn nuts just spinning and not undoing.
say, you allowed bumpers made out of metal bar/ scaffolding poles  i was thinking of having 2 running along the back.. maybe 3...

I was going to use the original brackets and a few lengths of exhaust pipe with some ninety degree bends welded on for good measure. By way of unification I was going to make side rails the same way.

well i am getting a few bits and bobs.. all free bees too!!

not doing much work on the car as i dont have the cash to get more sheet steel. no one gives me that!

heres a few pictures of some of the stuff ive been given:
man that tow bar was huge..

If you're desperate for sheet steel, track down an old dishwasher or the like. The metal on them is a little thin gauge but it will suffice. I was in a similar position with my first car a Lada Niva, by the end I thought about putting a Hotpoint badge next to the Lada badge
Or cut the wall off a van in a scrappy.

Edit:

Free and I bet this has good thick 50s steel too

An interesting topic but why do people think that after an apocalyptic event we would all drive Mad Max cars, surely with no-one else around the few survivors could help themselves to whatever they fancied, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche etc.

There was an apocalyptic event in the banking industry yet they all still drive Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche etc :p

I like the look of that, but I would like it if the top was on a locking hinge so you could make the top rest over the top of the bonnet, look it in position, but be able to pivot it back so that you could open the bonnet. In the post apocolyptic future folks would be trying to steal engine parts for their own cars or to build weaponry, or to disable your car so you were unable to reach distant food supplies (so more for them)

I posted you a video on youtube John, my throttle pedal bracket has snapped at the pivot :( I pretty much know I have to weld it back together but I would appreciate some advice?

just ordered some bits from the net,

2x new UJ's for the prop shaft and a master brake cylinder.

sadly this leaves me with not much left for the suspension, bar what is in my wallet.. about £30 :/

ahh disaster with the prop shaft.. one of the UJ's (one in the housing) has a cracked bearing race. (metal cadge that holds the ball bearings in)

sadly i know these are about £50+ to replace.. i was hoping to just re-pack them full of grease and make them live again. anybody have an old one that is 2nd hand? (Bartpanda?) will pay for postage if i can get it really cheap. (really really cheap)

sigh i am actually thinking of giving up with this due to how much it is going to cost.. i dont have the money to keep talon in a road worthy condition let alone take another project on.

here is a list of faults it has that i need to sort out:

needs a set of front and back seats, complete brake overhaul including pipes, back plates, calipers drums and discs, gearbox need all new seals (if the box its self is good), both inner CV boots need changing, engine needs a new sump gasket, needs a complete exhaust including gaskets and down pipe, prop shaft needs parts, engine needs a damn good service, needs a complete suspension renewal (rear leafs are OK), all bushes need renewing, needs new wheel bearings, steering gators need renewing, new ball joints (all of them!), sills need a complete rebuild from the inside out. wiring needs sorting out.

i think even the mighty VmanC would struggle with this one... :/

i know however that it is all fixable. i am not saying that is is not. it all boils down to how deep the pockets are. sadly for me i dont even have pockets

I have one or two used, they both has some play and need new grease but are stll usable I think. will dig them out on saturday and check them. They are yours if you want them, Will go to post office and ask how much to send them to UK.
You can also go to your local used parts supplier :) and check for any scrapped fiat, lancia or alfa romeo with split shafts{ cars with longer shaft divided into two parts, this joint is beetwen the shafts and on the shorter shaft near the gearbox} Any uno tipo tempra regata strada dedra delta thema croma alfa 155 145 etc.... will do_Or some other cars with 100mm diameter 25 splines on driveshafts or propshaft, eg some smaller engined ford scorpios has 100mm 25spl. on propshaft, no audi/vw group{ 100mm but i think 33 splines}

PS:ups... You are talking about UJ or CV joint John?,........."metal cadge that holds the ball bearings in" sounds like broken CV joint, not UJ{no balls and cagein the UJ} I have used CV joints if needed. :)

yeah its the CV joint.. thing full of grease.. i only need one though.
these ones are rather rattly. sadly this prop shaft has all been off before so i guess it is going to vibrate like mad as there are no markings on it.

to be fair i am thinking of scrapping the whole prop shaft and trying to find a complete never been taken apart before replacement prop shaft. the whole reason why i took it all to bits was to re-new it and stick it on Talon to get rid of the crazy amounts of vibration talons original one has.

sadly there is nowhere within 50 miles of me that does any kind of balancing. so i cant get it re-balanced.

think i am going to take them both off and have it 2wd. to hell with it. i just cant live with the vibration on a daily driving car.

in fact.. think of this..:

damn nice find.. ive sent them a message, i wonder if i will get the props done cheaper if i take them both in at the same time...
need to stretch every penny as far as it will go here if i can keep the fallout project going.

(i had to move it today to get my dads car over the pit.. started first turn of the key.. kinda brings a tear to ones eye.. i really dont want to turn my back on this.)

been doing some welding on the fallout project.
the rear of the sill, back skin and inner sill have been rebuilt. now all i need to do is weld all 3 together. should not be too hard.

i still have the rest of the sill to do. all the way down it and around the central jacking point. first though lots of cutting.

will get pictures of it later...

sadly still no pictures. the weather has been horrible here! massive winds and rain. not to mention its damn cold too.

i have started to put all the dash all back in now however. starting to look more like a car now inside.

oh and i have fixed ish the really slack gear stick. theres now no play forwards or backwards which is nice now. plenty of side to side play but i can now get the gears. not tested them all yet as i cant really drive it. the seat is currently "russian style" a milk crate.

ahh speaking of seats. does anybody have -anything- they what to throw out panda wise that will help me fix something on this project? i want some seats for it, some old ripped ones.. see here:
https://www.fiatforum.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=30280

and also i Really need anything to go with the suspension. i am even willing to stick 2x4 struts/dampeners on the thing so if anyone has an old set please let me know. i'll work out the differences with 4x4 and 2x4 struts/dampeners when i get them.
https://www.fiatforum.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=30143&cat=111

i know a wheel bearing has gone on the front passenger side, but i have an old one off Talon that still rolls smooth with no play so i will swap that over when i do the CV boots and clean up the calipers.

John Dragon Man, donations (in old rusted but "still has life left in them" parts) most appreciated!

doesn't hurt to ask right?

Hi John,

I have a full set of seats doing nothing but prob a bit far away for you? They were in good condition a couple of years ago when they went into the back of the lockup - I guess their condition now may depend on whether meeces mices or mooses have found them!! ;)

I don't see a use for them in the foreseeable so anyone is welcome to them. You can always take the covers off if you think they're too good to destroy, but I'm not worried what happens to them.

Not easily accessible for photos, but can sort out if you need them. (y)
