News flash, I’ve just managed to post up pictures on goods I’m selling on gumtree :D and best of all I’ve just sold a mountain bike. Happy days:D I’ve other car parts on as well, new bits, so complete with photos, I recon they won’t last long....:)

This sounds like a conversation I had yesterday with my 68 year old father who manage to sell a potters wheel on gumtree he had in the garage since the 80s lol he was very excited about it

To be fair my laptop of many years gave up the ghost and my son-in-law rigged up a tablet for me, and I’ve found out you can do everything with the one devise :D As the old saying goes, it’s only easy when you know the answer. It’s easy for you whipper snappers :D

Update, it’s an iPad I have now.

The iPad (and competing tablet computers when they catch up) is the future of computing for ‘most’ people.

Steve Jobs used the analogy of America. Initially most people had ‘big trucks’ and needed them. But as people got urbanised and cities grew cars evolved and became more minimal and efficient and more suitable for most people. Big trucks are still around today but only for the real heavy lifting stuff by people with the specific needs. That’s how laptops and typical PCs will be, always there but less common.

He said this in 2010. It’s becoming apparent now. Most people I know - older, but also younger and my age who don’t particularly care much about technology - seem to find the iPad the best blend of speed, ease of use and capability versus throwing money at a slow, creaky plastic HP laptop with a 3 hour battery life, which technically can do all sorts of things the iPad can’t, when all they need is something for Netflix, typing up a CV, opening emails and browsing Facebook. All tasks that I’d argue the iPad does better, faster and more gracefully.

<not being paid by Apple, but if they want to start paying me I’ll happily plaster this over every forum known to man> [emoji16]

Did he mention anything about cars becoming 'more minimal', then growing again to match the size of their forbears?
Current MINI, bigger than a Golf
Current Polo bigger than original Golf.
For stopped making large cars, dropped the Granada/Scorpio, now Mondeo larger than them. (I read somewhere that the current Mondeo is almost as wide, or was it wider, than the Mk X Jaguar, which was always considered too big for our roads and sales were low as a result.)

It is sad that computer manufacturers continue to develop ever faster and more capable machines, for ordinary people to watch movies and share trivia.

I've never got on with a tablet. Currently I'm at a desktop, typing with both hands, and multiple fingers, impossible on a tablet. That is then countered by the argument that you can add a stand and a keyboard - that'll be my laptop then, or the desktop.

For work, I occasionally need to make short presentations in-car. A tablet works for that, but later, I have to compile a report, which needs a keyboard. Not intending to carry two devices, I got a convertible laptop, that folds onto itself to make a heavy tablet, but unfold to become a normal laptop. I think I got one of the last with a hard drive.

Business still uses spreadsheets and word processing programs, and to be able to move these around the world with customers and suppliers, a standard format is needed, currently Microsoft Excel and Word. Not so easy on Apple products.

I have a desktop, two laptops, an old netbook and an Android tablet.
Old netbook running Windows7 is used mainly for MultiECUscan, replaced for work by the convertible laptop.
The tablet I'm still trying to get my head around, used almost solely for connecting to the Fabia diagnostics.

Happy to remain in the dark ages.:D

Aye it does look like an iPad is the way for me to go. I’ve had desktops and before this iPad that my son-in-law lent me, I had a lap top. Far from hopeless, but I’m not up to speed as some of you youngsters. Since I’ve retired from work, I think an iPad will fit the bill. I really wanted another laptop, but there’s not too many about up here and the ones are available are stupid money, especially so for my needs now. You never know what’s round the corner.

I’ve had iPads for the last 10 years getting a iPad2 when they first came out, they are very useful and great if you’re doing stuff around the house or on holiday but as a serious business machine they just don’t match up.

The biggest problem in my mind is how you manage files, even now you can’t save your files to say an SD car to put in another machine which might sound a silly thing but means I could never use an iPad to run my 3D printer.
They are not powerful enough to do any serious video editing, and video editing programs are generally lacking in features on an iPad, so a computer is needed for that, also you need to spend huge sums to get enough storage on the iPad, I have a 128gb version which is fine generally but fills up super quick if I start importing 5-10gb video files, and I can’t just plug in an external drive without them importing everything to the iPad. They are no good when it comes to proper gaming, you don’t games like GTA V on the iPad and that’s a 7 year old game. Garage band is ok but it’s a million times better and easier to use on a Mac, which I do use with a keyboard sometimes. An iPad is ok for the internet basically some games full of in app purchases and if you want to read off or make notes in a meeting but if you need to do anything serious you need something you can sit at with a propper keyboard and mouse.

I run an recent i7 laptop with plenty of memory, hard drive space and a Nvidia graphics card which is a 17 inch model, I’ve just discovered plug in LCD screens so may have to get one to clip on and give me more desk top space when away from the monitor in my office.

They should nave have made the internet so easy to use, its the reason for the spread of idiocy.
Back when you couldn't get on the net if you didn't know how to configure your own modem and constantly fix problems with earlier versions of windows and use ms dos.you never got all these stupid people creating more stupid people.
you had to have a bit of sense just to get on the net, now all you need to know is how to turn on your phone :bang:

They can't do everything yet, and definitely don't so some things as well - that's for sure. Though I believe there is a genuine MultiECUScan app and accessory for phones / tablets on the App Store (but I think it's subscription based - a trend I don't like so much!)

Even without the internet, the quality of TV news, newspapers and other sources of information are equally terrible these days IMO. At least nobody can have full control over what we put / see on the internet. I think people should be encouraged to question the source more and read more perspectives on any form of media

That's true. If I was running a business - especially online based like web design etc or any design work that was heavy duty nothing would replace the utility of a Wintel laptop basically. Though, I suppose even someone who does need a machine like that still might want that separation of personal and 'fun' stuff to be on the iPad. I know I prefer having a dedicated work laptop versus a previous job where I'd use my own - the lack of divide between work and personal sucked after a while.

They're getting better with file management and the likes of the new Pro model has USB-C which makes connecting external drives a bit more easy versus the sorta useless lightning interface. Try LumaFusion and Affinity Photo / Designer on the iPad, these are pretty full featured suites and perform remarkably well - typically better than a Windows laptop until you get to the higher end stuff with the big boy GPUs. - of course, still debatably crippled by the small screen / touch input.

This year they've gotten much better too with proper mouse support and trackpad support with some accessories, but then again, the question arises 'why not just buy a laptop?' so they're definitely not perfect for heavy workflows.

I was iPad only last year and now back on the Mac. Definitely overkill now that I don't 'need' it like in the past. Looking forward to seeing what the post-Intel Macs bring. Perhaps some kind of hybrid between a tablet and a desktop OS machine.

The big question is do the new usb-C models allow you to use an external drive as an external drive or do they still want to import photos and videos to the iPad before you can work with them. Also for the cost of a large screen iPad Pro and pencil maybe the keyboard case the iPads cost far surpasses what you’d pay for a pretty good laptop with a 1Tb hard drive.

My comparably has replaced all the company laptops with Microsoft surface pro’s in the last year and I have yet to find someone who prefers them over a normal laptop, that just doing normal office stuff no high end creation software running just word, excel, outlook and a few bespoke corporate web apps even then the tablet format surface pro is not easy to work on because of the compromise keyboard the non adjustable screen angle and the small screen size but hive resolutions resulting in tiny icons.

The other thing with the surface pro is it actually is designed for this type of work so if you need USB ports a hdmi port and network cable connected and any other ports they are all managed by one accessory hub, with the iPad you have to buy a separate and expensive dongle for everything you want to do.

The biggest and most useful thing Apple could do is put an SD card reader on the iPad which can be used a storage space, but they won’t because profits trump use ability and they make far too much from huge price increases for every extra GB of storage.

They do, but through the iOS Files app which has its limitations.

I like the Surface Pro and have come close to buying one over the years, but the lack of Thunderbolt (the fast connection on Macs) put me off for the money. Some swear by them, others say they're not a good tablet nor a good laptop but I suppose it's preference.

Apple will never add more ports to the iPad and if they do it'll be USB-C. They took the SD card slot out of the MacBook Pro in 2016 (probably the best selling professional laptop for photographers around the world but can't back that up). The iPad is their 'purest' form of what they think computing should be and the future and they'll likely never 'complicate it' with adding an SD slot.

I know what you're referring to though, originally they had the dongle accessory where you had to import it to your Photos app to then have to move it into an app to do work on which was so annoying. But that 2017 Files app addition changed things massively.

Each year is a step in the right direction though and the capability and usability increases. I remember being 'iPad only' back when the iPad 2 came out... now those days were the dark ages for the iPad looking back! Lol

I have a current iPad that I bought only a couple of months back its the cheaper version without USB-C (non pro version) I have been using iPads for the last ten years and the file app while introduced only a few years ago is pretty terrible for doing anything useful. I can't see that plugging in an external drive would allow access to the files from the drive I have just tried in fact the main problem being that the external drive uses too much power for the iPad, but you can use an SD card to access files, obviously this requires a dongle to hang out of the bottom of the iPad. Largely this isn't much use because I have Office 365 so all my office files are in the cloud and I can access them on the iPad anyway, but using the office apps is not as good as on a proper laptop with a mouse. If for example I want to insert a picture into a word document I am working on this can't be done unless that picture is imported to the iPad. Its the same with videos if making a presentation, everything has to be imported to the iPad to access it in apps. This doesn't just apply to Microsoft apps its the same in all apps and doesn't allow access to externally stored files from things like Pages or keynote. So i can't say I agree that the Files app is any use at all... at least I have yet to find a use for it.

I have quite an expensive Microsoft Bluetooth mouse for my laptop but the apple pencil is nearly twice as expensive... for a stick with a battery in it. ive never found a stylus to be brilliantly accurate as they tend to move the contact point ever so slightly if you tilt the stylus/pencil while using them.

Actually If I am being honest my iPhone is more useful than my iPad, mainly because it will connect very easily to things like my DJI Osmo Pocket to take control adjust settings and work with videos. It will also connect to my DSLR and the phone seems to get more apps than the iPad with better support. I can for example run a huge number of social media accounts from my phone very easily where as the same apps for the iPad are more clunky or non existent.

I do love my iPad and I do use it a huge amount, but I do not believe they will ever replace the Laptop, they however are much more useful at times that you want something that is much more portable and for consuming media, brilliant for watching films and TV, brilliant for books great for making notes in a meeting and for light work, If you have to get a flight they fit in your hand luggage and don't weigh very much and they can be easily used as a passenger in a car. The laptop on the other hand (the one i have) is very big and very heavy so come out when I have some big jobs to tackle like video and picture editing, 3D design work and if I need to do a lot of writing or presentations.

Is that the iPad Air 3? It’s a good job I had that for a while.

Yeah the Lightning connection and the lack of USB C power delivery on them makes a spinning hard drive flakey at best. But it mounts straight into the side of the Files app and you can drag and drop between On My iPad or OneDrive or iCloud etc. You can have all the cloud services in the Files app. But Microsoft’s OneDrive app is very good, maybe better.

I recommend the Logitech MX Master mouse with the free wheel scroll, so handy for work. Still looking for a good keyboard (but not gaming) just purely office work.

Yeah I suppose it’s the analogy Steve Jobs used again though, for most people the small car (iPad) is fine. But there will always be those who needs the heavier duty tools. And also just some people who will always insist in driving their Range Rover in urban London (students I knew who used big Alienware gaming laptops for Microsoft word) lol

If I need anything major regarding computer work, I just ask my wife. She works from home now, a lecturer in psychology child and youth studies,and she has a multi screen computer system. I,m not allowed near the system :D but she’s more than happy to help me out at times.

stolen from Karen who stole it from Rick, not sure if Rick stole it..

If I hear one more person go off on conspiracy theory tangents about Covid 19 being a myth, or similar, I might get a little bit wild.
Let’s take a minute to talk about why this is absolutely, f**king, ridiculous.
At no point EVER in the history of the world, have all the governments, of all the countries, of the whole world, got together and gone “hey, can we all agree that there is some kind of plague going on? You all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“Okay, can we all agree to disagree publicly about the best way to handle it? It’ll seem more realistic this way? You all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“Okay, can we get all the doctors and nurses etc on board? We’ll need some people to lie about cause of death for at least 700,000 people... you all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“Some of you might have to cop a bit of crap, and be pretty much blamed for everything, including who individual idiots choose to shag. You okay with that Dan?”
* Dan nods head
“We’ll need Bill Gates to promote a vaccine that includes a microchip... can someone get Bill on board? You all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“We’re gonna call it Corona virus - it’s a real type of virus thing, but can someone check with Cerveceria Modelo if they’re happy for their beer to take a hit when idiots correlate the two? You all okay with that? Mexico? Belgium?”
* all nod heads
“We’ll need to spread the non-existent plague through 5G towers - can someone get the telco’s for every country on board? You all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“Look, we’re going to need to crash the economy of the whole world - you might cop some flack... you all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“We need a guy to eat a raw bat... we need to have a country to blame....can someone get on that? China? Thanks. You all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“After that, we’ll need some ways to spread it - let’s focus mainly on cruise ships and old folks homes - you all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“Some weirdos might come out of the woodwork - we’re gonna have to put tinfoil supply into overdrive.... you all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“They’re the ones we want though, okay? Divide and conquer. You all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“Oh yeah, no leaks, ok? The public can’t know about this.... you all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“We’ll need a coupla high profile celebs on board? They need to be loveable. Can someone check if Tom Hanks is happy to get it and recover? Also, check if Tim Brookes-Taylor is happy to get it and die. You all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“Now, Trump, you’re gonna have to keep acting like a dickhead, if this is to be believable. America will probably have to have more deaths than most other countries, and it needs to seem like it’s your fault - you okay with that Don?”
* Trump: “Covfefe”
“Awesome. Great that we’re all agreeable. Now, if any of you in the room are currently at war with another country in the room, you need to keep that act up, or they’ll be onto us - you all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“Oh, and we need someone to come up with bizarre cures....anyone? Anyone? Don?”
* Trump: “I know a voodoo doctor? Bleach? Internal light? Hydroxychloroquine?”
“Perfect. You all okay with that?”
* all nod heads
“Cool. Does anyone wanna know why we’re doing this?”
* all shake heads
“Great, let’s get to it.”
* all nod heads
Seriously, if Covid 19 is a myth, then world peace could have been achieved.

"you never got all these stupid people creating more stupid people."

I don't buy this statement as I believe there to be a dearth of sensible people suitable for conversion.

I’m not going to use a mouse with an iPad when I have an infinitely more useful and powerful laptop with a mouse.

There also also obvious connectivity issues with an iPad if you start plugging in usb devices you can only use one accessory before it complains about power consumption. You only get two Bluetooth connections, so if I was working in GarageBand with my keyboard (the musical kind) connected by Bluetooth and some Bluetooth earphones and my blue yeti microphone connected via usb, there is no way to plug in or connect anything else up. You can’t even charge it without yet another dongle to give 2 lightning connectors, then you need another dongle to give you a USB port.
A laptop will do it all without any adaptors, dongles and can still charge, connect multiple Bluetooth devices.

As I keep saying I do love my iPad and get a lot of use out of it, in areas that it is actually good, mainly internet and apps but an iPad will never be able to work as well as a proper laptop for

This is why most of what Apple sells these days are MacBooks
