How To...?

The oil/diesel and engine components WILL get hot and ultimately have the potential to cause burns, please take care!
Points noted with a (*) should be repeated for best resuts

  • Run engine until warm (Cooling fan cuts in and out twice)
  • Remove sump plug (12mm Allen Key/Socket & Ratchet/Breaker Bar)
  • Drain bad engine oil (Into the bucket)
  • Remove Oil Filter (Using Water Pump Pliers/Grips, the filters can sometimes be really well stuck on making them impossible to undo by hand)
  • Refit sump plug*
  • Fit new oil filter*
  • Remove oil filler cap (in the middle at the front)*
  • Pour 3.9 litres of diesel into the engine through the engine oil filler.*
  • Refit Oil Filler Cap*
  • Run engine with no loads at all on idle for 30 mins*
  • Turn off engine*
  • Drain diesel from sump, remove filter and leave sump plug out for 30mins or so*
  • Fit new oil filter (smear a little general purpose grease on the seal and tighten by hand)
  • Refit sump plug and tighten to 49Nm (36.14 Lb-Ft)
  • Pour 3.9 litres of Fiat (or equivelant) 10w40 fully synthetic engine oil into the through the engine oil filler.
  • Replace engine oil filler cap
  • Start engine and allow to warm up (cooling fan cut in and out twice)
  • Stop engine, wait for 5-10 mins, to allow oil to settle in sump
  • Check level with dipstick
  • Top up oil as required
  • Take her for a run revel in the silence and rest deep in the knowledge that it's all good for the next 4000-6000 miles
