I'm sure loads of people have looked at it, usually on their way to another car on the pitch that they're actually interested in!

Re: Starting to panic now!

How any one can design a car without a sump plug is beyond me. If yours hasn't got one, then according to a friendly AA man, you're asking for trouble as any sludge that would be carried out when the oil is drained sits there in the sump until it gets dragged all round the engine. Smart? Sounds pretty stupid to me.

Re: Starting to panic now!

The main electrical component that fails on Fiat group cars is the MAF sensor, made by Bosch, who forgive me if I a wrong is er... German. The days of Fiat electrical problems went away when the rust did (you can't get a good earth on a painted bit of metal, scrape the paint away to get the contact and the exposed metal will rust and your contact point will fall off!). The likelyhood is your car could be made in Poland which is where a lot of Mercedes are also built..... However, I have a car built at the Mirafiori factory and that is still working 100% and its 10 years old though!

As for the remap, if you are trading it in, don't worry about it. The dealers can't tell for certain and 95% of the cars that are mapped don't get put back to standard before being sold on. I actually wish they would to be honest !

Re: Starting to panic now!

Go for it, thats a stonking good deal on your smart. MAF sensors seem to fail on all cars these days, ours has gone on a VW, but its made by Hitachi.
Keep us informed, its really exciting isnt it, and dont forget... because of my last buying experiance Im even more nervous than you!

Re: Starting to panic now!

1. Fiats do not have common mechanical problems. yes some of the cars can have problems but so can any make of car. The engines the 500 uses are tried and tested and prooven to be reliable. They are all based on the FIRE family which fiat has been using since the late 80s! They are very reliable engines! Obviously with all engines, you need to look after them if you want them to reliable so its advised to stick with the servicing schedual.

2. Fiats CAN have electrical problems but its the same with all cars. No car is perfect as they are designed and made by humans. The odd car here and there might have a problem but certinatly not all of them will have problems. Its true that italian cars have a sterotype of having electrical problems but I think you will find that this is more commonly found on Alfas, not fiats.

The people in this country really need to realise that Fiat isnt the same company it used to be in the early nineties. And even then, the cars were nowhere near as bad as people made out. There are still plenty of late 80s, early ninties fiats around on the road and in good condition too! If they have been looked after then theres no reason to doubt it being a good car.

Re: Starting to panic now!

Well said... just to inspire you further, I run a 1992 Panda everyday, it has nearly 70,000 on it now and has covered over 25,000 in 2 years and 3 months. Never broken down and only problems apart from wear and tear items have been earthing faults caused buy corroded terminals... in their defence the weather has been pretty wet for some time

My best mates fleet of older VWs has been far less impressive. In fact, because of our VW I have recently taken out RAC cover, something Ive never had in 11 years of Fiat ownership

On the whole, the Polish made Fiats have been better made and built than their Italian cousins IMHO. Ive had 6 Polish Fiats btw.
