General Winter is here, Advice please

Now winter is here the punto is coverd up now but was wondering, Will i be ok to take the battery off all winter or will it loose it code system memory for the chip in the key? as i have no red key just one blue one

Not a huge fan of takeing it off due the this.

Thanks

what do you mean covered up? if you have chucked a cover over it take it off, it will trap moisture,

id say leave it on and run it every couple of weeks, maybe move back and forth a little to clear brakes ?

I'd do that. Run it till the fan cuts in, run it up and down a little, no cover, silica gel to protect the inside from mildew, etc.

You might consider changing the oil and filter before you lay it up. Check, please, the antifreeze, if in doubt, change it.

Yes its under a car cover but the wheels stick out,Winter is rather horrable at the seaside at the mo.

oil, filter and anti freeze was changed earlier on this year

Have got damp christals in tubs in my car what all the caravaners use whilst they shut the caravans up for the winter to absorb the damp moisure.

Think i will keep it on then just dont want another battery geting nackerd.

I would say is safe to just disconnect the battery. However even a disconnected battery may discharge a bit, but should be fine to reuse unless is on its last legs.

use an Optimate or similar conditioning charger, It will keep the battery topped up to the max so no risk of hard sulphate damaging the cells but it wont overcharge the battery.

I've had mine at least 10 years and (one of) the best things I bought.

Make sure coolant is full strength. If its getting old change it or you risk the engine freezing.

A nylon car cover is ok as they breathe and should keep sea salt spray at bay, But any cover can rub the paint flapping in the wind so must be pulled down tight.

Run the engine every month until fully hot to make sure oil is circulated and moisture is blown out of the exhaust.

Agreed no need for battery out, I got one of those polyester car covers from Lidl and it was a load of S?!$e! No proper draw cords to tigh it on tightly and was supposed to be breathable opened the car up the other day and after 2 weeks it looked like a mushroom farm!

if leaving the battery in the car i would wrap it in polystyrene so it doesnt freeze whilst stood for days as this always seems to be the quickest killer of batteries in the winter in my opinion
