Windows 7?

Windows 7?

Just a wild guess but:

1. It'll take a memory upgrade to run
2. It'll need more space on your HDD
3. It'll be full of bugs
4. It'll have more methods to limit your software use/selection
5. It'll be expensive
6. It'll require new drivers/interface cards to be compatible
7. It'll be expensive
8. It'll be bloatware
9. It'll rip off some other OS features
10. Did I mention it'll be expensive?

a little reading will answer 1 & 2 for you
and its not what you expect

how did you get it?
i never did get on the M$ site

By following the instructions from the site you linked to :)

Basically open the site it tells you to, press sign in (Even if you already appear to be signed in!!!!) then paste the link in and bingo :)

Cheers for that btw Custard. Ended up just getting everything from that site as it was less of a problem than the silly rapidshare downloads.

Must say it is smoother than Vista but I just don't like the UI. Just downloading some TF2 files now and we'll see how much better it is performance wise in games.

Edit: If you still have trouble then PM me and I'll PM you a licence key as I've been greedy and taken several for friends :)

I like it, a lot. Much faster than Vista. There are also many more transitions/animations and the UI is a lot more polished. I also like how windows are grouped into one icon and then when hovered over the preview it focuses the window and only shows the outlines of the others.

When shutting down, if many apps were open before, Vista would display the screen to continue but now Windows 7 actually forces the apps to close and updates the list with which apps need to close still.

There are many many small touches to this OS that can only be found by playing with it.

Very good, my computer needed a format so just replaced Vista with 7 x64 and i'm very impressed so far.

Funny because it's the UI I don't like myself :p

I do agree the performance is much better though. What other little touches stand out as being good for you? Personally I just miss my quicklaunch bar too much :(

Whats so bad about the UI? Everything is much cleaner yet you get a better view of things because hovering over the group shows you live preview of the windows. So instead of 5 IE Windows in the taskbar you have one, hovering over it shows you what window contains what site.

Just minor changes everywhere. Can't really be bothered to list them all. I do have a feeling that 7 uses a tad more memory than Vista... but the performance is much better so shall have to see. Although i've not had chance to properly test it yet, just installing Visual Studio and what not.

I don't like the fact that there's no quicklaunch and no option for one.

When I right click on an icon on the desktop or in a directory the options come up from where I clicked. When I click on something in the taskbar the options don't spring from where I clicked but from above the taskbar. I mean wtf? That's not a minor tweak to the UI, that's changing how clicks work and clicks have behaved the same since Windows 3. I somehow doubt that'll make it through to release. When you add something to the taskbar as a quicklaunch icon it's almost indistinguishable from the running programs in the taskbar which is also retarded. Yes it looks clean but it's simplicity for the sake of looks rather than usability. I mean I like my iPod and the interface is simple, efficient and excellent but that's only because my iPod does a very limited number of things.

This should give you some idea about what I mean.

See my attachment which shows where the options come up when you right click anywhere on the highlighted program in the taskbar.

One would assume that Quick Launch has been removed in favour of pinning applications to the taskbar.

The Options menu should spring above the item right-clicked. Your screenshot demonstrates this.

The options menu is probably detirmined from the Application running. Most of the right click options on the task-bar are redundant anyway. So it keeps close and adds lots of new functionality.

Makes sense to me.

I uninstalled it mind you as I couldn't get XNA Game Studio to install which i need, so back to Vista for me.

But quick launch has always worked well and is very function. I found out how to resurrect it anyway so I'm not too bothered about it now to be honest.

Here's how to get it back

My point about the right click wasn't about what it achieved but how it went about it. If the options menu sprung up from where I clicked that would be fine. What gets me is the fact they've altered the behaviour of something as simple as a right click. That's like waking up in the morning and finding that when you go to move your right leg forward your left leg goes forward. It's also the fact that the behaviour of the right click changes depending on where you click as well.

It's a shame really because they've managed to make UAC less intrusive and it seem faster although I seem to be getting pretty much the same performance in games which makes me think this won't be a performance upgrade in that sense.

I don't see the huge issue with the right click but i'll suppose we'll have to agree to disagree! :D

There will be no such agreement! I shall batter you into submission :p

Just kidding I'm happy to agree to disagree even though you're really wrong :p

USB Datasticks? How much ram does the system have?

Only problem I've seen is with software which doesn't support Vista suprisingly doesn't run on seven. Worst is Starforce DVD protection which actually tried to break the machine. Had to use system recovery to get back into windows.
