Due to do a service and sort the back brake squeal on brother's Focus Mk1 today. Best to have the full day, in case of difficulties. So the lazy **** turned up at 12:07.
Looked at the brakes first. RH wheel cylinder weeping, bolts rounded off, so need to remove whole backplate. Those bolts tight as they've been in there 16 years and cheap flanged heads mean even a decent 6-point socket is trying to round them off. Ran out of time, will now need another day to drill them out.
LH wheel cylinder seized, replaced OK.
Car bought about a year ago, after previous owner got fed up with constant rear brake squeal. Her garage had 'looked' at it at least 4 times. So they apparently rounded off the RH wheel cylinder bolts, so left it, and failed to spot that a seized cylinder on the left would cause a squeal due to only one shoe against the drum. Your life in their incompetent hands.
Dread to think how I'll get on when I can no longer do it all myself.
