What's made you grumpy today?

Well this job would mean moving darn sarth to Southampton and flying around the world installing specialised kit. The money I make could be used to emigrate :chin: :D.

The down sides I can see are: 1) Family and 2) I'd have to give up my current job which I've worked hard in over 4 years to make it to mid management level and is secure and 9-5!

I think it comes down to 1 question, happiness.

Are you happy where you are atm, are your family happy as they are atm.

Are you going to be happy / enjoy the new job, are your family going to be happy / enjoy the new life style should you take the next job.

I think it depends how ambitious you are.

We have to be prepared to move in this life, just as immigrant workers do.
The question I would ask is, will a job like my old job still be available later should I want it?

Lots of people live away from their families; navy, army, international salespeople, ex-patriots on foreign contracts.... I worked in the Middle East for ten years and some people were glad to get away from home, for all sorts of reasons. Children could visit in the holidays, or be put in local schools. Wives either stayed at home with the kids or were present and the kids were in boarding schools.

In the nineteenth century the Indian Army had secondments of seven years without home leave...

Having done the 'work away' thing for over ten years, I would say it all depends on your priorities. If its materialistic then it will work out just fine, if however its family then you will start to resent leaving them behind and won't enjoy the job. When I started I was married, without kids and it was all about paying the mortgage, flash holidays and cars. After eight years we started a family and my priorities changed to the point where I hated my job so much that I jacked it in so I could see the kids grow up. Now I don't even work school holidays and don't regret giving up the money as I have a good 'life'.

I'm just starting out with the whole work away thing.

As a Cadet, I get 1 week leave for every 30 days onboard ship. Generally, it's 4 months on. Once qualified (touch wood - next year) the work/leave ratio is about 4-on 3-off.

My aim is to reach a point where I can move ashore into a role in which I can still use my training and experience - but be able to have a family.

My Dad was never around much as I was growing up, because of work. I don't want to do the same to my kids (as/when/if I have them)

Nor was mine, but when I did see him he had amazing stories to tell. My friends' fathers seemed to be boring as hell, suits, gardening and maybe golf! Awful.

Having said that, the junior officers on his ship were just working to get their papers so that they could get jobs on cross channel ferries and be home at night. It seemed odd to me at the time, but now I understand it. A bit ;)

I don't want to do cross channel ferries - but nor do I want to stay with my current employers long term (3 year return of service IF I sign the contract at the end of my cadetship).

Gotta admit - the reactions from people when you share even the most routine and mundane of experiences are pretty cool lol

Taking a part out - find the fault

Go to scrap yard - remove the same part from another car to find its not the same :(

And the day gets worse, not only did i not get the part i need

I washed the car - only to find 2x bird **** on it now.... on my clean car - SERIOUSLY?

My day was bad because my wheels and spoiler didn't come and I got my grades to go to uni meaning I'm condemned to 3 more years of education and poor decisions

her indoors saying to me why don't you use my car instead of yours.

which translated as- my cars running like a bag of ****, has been for sometime, I haven't told you, it's now got worse and I'm worried its terminal.

yep you guessed it, the 306 is knackered, centre section of exhaust has snapped and I think the air intake to the turbo has split too.

so instead of record shopping today with MY birthday money, I'm parts shopping and fitting an exhaust... on the drive... as if it doesn't get done now she can't earn any money this week.
