Come Join the 5 pot club! Almost standard Mk1 HGT 73k - 30mpg!!

golf gti

megane coupe F7r

but why are u after a newish car? they arent any better...nothing to how off...just a big plastic cover over the engine and u have to service them to keep the value... go for an oldish car...better tunning and modding opportunities.

u can out and buy an absalute minter for that money, might be old, but u could blow anyone off!! and to be fair, after a 1.4 bravo, anything will be nippy haha!! even a push bike!!

Aye - the Alfa I had for a short while was a prime example. 3 months older and my tax would have been a hell of a lot less in 2 years time. Proposed increase on mine was up to £310 a year!

How is there better tunning opportunities on older cars, and what would you class as an older car??

You have to service any car, it's not about maintaining value it's about maintaining the car.

A newer car will give you better/modern styling, not always better build quality though, more than likely reliability will be better. Don't confuse the two. :)

Personally, I wouldn't touch anything French as I'm an Italian car man. ;) You could get a decent 3.0 V6 GTV for that sort of money!! But then theres insurance, tax and maintenance issues.

As for tax, I dont mind paying the extra money (mine falls into the £300 cat :( ) so long as it gets spent on better roads not those useless red stripes that seem to be painted on EVERY road.

older cars as in the real driving cars...like old fiats, UNO turbo, they were and still are stunning, renault 5 turbo....ford escort s1 turbo...fiesta xr3i...small and very quick, not expensive to insure at all. and asfor tunning...they are very unlimited.

new cars, like say a brand new bravo...not much there is there??? cars tend to be getting bigger and bigger...hense why the roads are ****ed up, old cars were small, small engines, and higly tunned for maximum output, but u could take it even further. id love a fully restored xr3, and witht he age of them, u will find alot of fully resotred ones for that money. u get respect for driving them down the road!

A pristine R5 Turbo (one that hasn't been blown in its past) will cost considerable amounts!! A friend had one a while back, lasted 3days :) Pop!! Insurance is a killer on things like that too.

I think the OP doesn't want to go for the poor look, by that I mean he's looking for something newer not a clapped out old banger lol. Sounds like he wants something to pull the birds ;)

GTV 2.0 TS just the ticket sunshine!!! Should find a decent one for that cash (belts done etc).

Had to laugh at that, my old fella may of respected me 15-20years ago but this is 2008 boy. :)

Ever thought about going the auctions??

Was there a few weeks a go (bell vue manchester) and saw some tidy cars going for some tidy money.

05plate audi a4 1.9tdi (bodywork was mint) £6400!!!

Worth a thought maybe.

MG- the way the car scene is going now a days, older is upgrading, newer cars are just pathetic now.

but i see what u mean. in that case get an MG ZR...decent money will get a decent buy :D

Shaun's simply showing that he doesn't keep up with the current goings on with modern cars. Cars have never been better imo. Handling, Safety, Comfort, Speed, Economy. There are 5 things that modern cars generally do better than old ones. By old i mean 10yrs old or more.

Example 1
1998 Ford Mondeo 1.8 (115bhp) = 30mpg
2008 Ford Mondeo 1.8 (125bhp) = 38mpg
And has improvements in all 5 areas above

or

Example 2
Take a 1998 Fiat Bravo 1.9JTD (105bhp) = 50mpg
Then a 2008 Fiat Bravo 1.6MJET(120bhp) = 57mpg
And has improvements in all 5 areas above.

I'd go on, but it'd get boring. And when you consider i compared cars from this year and 10 years ago, not cars from as far back as the 1980's like the R5 turbo or the XR3

Well, I know which i'd rather be sitting in ;)

Cars from the current decade are generally better than cars from older decades. The further back you go, the crappier they get. Everyones memories are fonder, and they remember the golden highlights. I'm sure everyone here remembers their childhoods when summers were sunnier and drier, and the winters were filled with snowmen...

yes buzz, i do know that, they are getting safer, and they are getting better build quality, better emisions etc...

im talking about people who really like the old skool cars that u have to work on every weekend just to get to work and back...thats joys of driving.

yes, u might want to get in ur car and know its guna drive, know itll get u and ur family home safely, i dont have a wife, or kids...just me and the girlfried, and she finds it exciting when i break down lol (which is alot)

people who really enjoy old skool driving, enjoy driving a drivers car will knwo what i mean about having a 1.6 tunned up to over 200BHP that u will have to rebuild every winter just to drive it for a summer.
