I get to do quite enough spanner work even on my modern cars, though i do see the appeal of engines that you can work on easily, and not the plastic shrouded electronically controlled ones we have today.

What i'm prescribing for the original poster is a daily driver, and what you are describing is basicaly only suitable as a 2nd car. Personally i'd LOVE a weekend car, as i'd be in the garage working on a 1990's rover mini cooper 1.3 most of the time if I wasn't whizzing around the country (or a track) in it.

Another thing is, you can't distiguish one make of car from another that much any more.

I drive an Alfa, I pop the bonnet and look at a GM engine full of bosch parts. Now I'm thinking where is all this italian build quality and superior german engineering crap coming from, I mean, all the problems on the Alfa's seem to be bosch parts??? Then I realise that alfa did, and quite rightly so, have a BAD rep in the 80's-90's so it's drummed into our heads that these cars will break down etc etc.

I am like you to shaun, no kids etc to worry about. Doesn't mean I want to drive round in a clapped out R5 gt lol. I want reasonable power, good handling, style and reliability (NO RUST TOO) Attributes I'm sure the OP is looking for aswell. :)

Speaking of which, where is the OP??? lol.

Shaun don't get me wrong I'm not a new car snob! This is the first new car i have had and the main reasons i had it was, safety, MPG, comfort & reliability*

I also had a 1980mgb, rubber bumper model, when I was 18 this was a great car even when it wouldn't start, my MG was older than me and I didn't class it as being an old car!!

I suppose a big reason for me keeping the Rat is so I still have an old (er) car I can have a play with at the weekend,

*only time will tell
