I get to do quite enough spanner work even on my modern cars, though i do see the appeal of engines that you can work on easily, and not the plastic shrouded electronically controlled ones we have today.
What i'm prescribing for the original poster is a daily driver, and what you are describing is basicaly only suitable as a 2nd car. Personally i'd LOVE a weekend car, as i'd be in the garage working on a 1990's rover mini cooper 1.3 most of the time if I wasn't whizzing around the country (or a track) in it.
