Only way to confirm actual damage done is to strip it..might be your best option before you go splashing out more cash..

you would recommend taking it to a garage to have the engine stripped to see whats wrong with it?

a few people i spoke to, one of whom is a mechanic said i might end up paying alot of money to strip it down, the problem may not be identified, and i would still need a new engine, which of course is even more expensive overall....

Lift the head and drop the sump thats all you need .from the top you will see if you have any valve damage in the head and whether the valves have touched the pistons or bore damage..from below you should be able to see if you have bent any conrods..:)

i havent got a clue what im doing! so id cause more problems if thats possible! lol.

the lad in the garage said he could strip it, but its no certain to highlight the problem..
and even if it highlights the damage then i still need the new engine to replace the damaged one

a perfect wway for you to learn how to strip an engine then :D given that you aren't loosing anything (and this would give you enough experience to then install your new engine yourself ;) )

Assuming it makes a racket when turned over (as apposed to simply not starting) then it's pretty obvious what the problem will be.

At BEST you're looking at head re-shim, new con-rod plus various head / sump gaskets and so on.

That assumes you didn't wreak the crankshaft bearing shell and that the piston/cylinder is still in good condition.

You could ask for a quote for doing that but I suspect it will be rather high :(

Also you might end up with an unbalanced engine, compared to how it came out of the factory - not to mention hidden issues which might show up after the work is done - so replacement would seem the safest bet to me.

yeh replacement is the best option i reckon..
i just dont fancy paying £2300 for one!
I'd pay a decent ammount for a good one.. theres a 1.4 16v on ebay for £1300.. but its done 100,000 miles...

soooo have you a big place, lots of tools and an engine krane?

300 - 600 is the price but i can't find any 1.4s at the moment (fiat do not sell complete engines - that price is for rughly half of what you'd call an engine)

what do i need that for? i can have the engine fitted for £150

i called and told them i need a replacement engine, and they said £2300 for a refurbished one.. would that not be everything i need?

Have you searched for panda 100hp engines Jon pretty sure its the same engine in both models..:)

Well you need to start some where so I think the best bet is to at least take off the head because even if you find a short engine you will still need the head and all ancillaries to go back on..so get at it get on your latex gloves and ..do the business..you have nothing to loos at the end of the day and everything to gain by salvaging the head if its in one piece..:)

so what is it the fiat would provide me? not everything i need? would i still need parts of the old engine?

will the 1.4 8v no go in?
i need an alternative incase i cant find a 1.4 16v

Forget the 8valver its a totally different engine and harness/wiring is again different..if you can locate a short engine that is one that gives you the block with pistons /crank/con rods already assembled you will still need all the other parts to re assemble on the new short engine..so you need to know if your original head is still good or damaged ..

for £2300 would the one from fiat only be the short engine?

thats why im looking for a salavges one fro ma car which is complete.. so its remove one, insert the other

At £2300 I would have thought it would be a complete engine..but who knows have you asked them..loads of breakers on line and thats a good one ffoxy put up for you ..you need to do some key board crunching and send of a request to as many as you can..and dont forget to include the panda 100hp as an alternative ..just in case..
