Re: I

This is my first time using the forum, ive seem a couple on line just wondering what was the best turbo to use, is there any where i can get a fittng manual.

Re: I

I've also been looking in to this for my cento. From what I've read, there is no "kit"....not anymore anyway....it's a custom job. The mechanical side won't be a problem, as I work in an engineering workshop with everything I need, so I can manufacture most parts myself....it's the ECU management which worries me....I can sort out the second injector and plenum chamber....but I'm assuming ideally it needs a standalone ECU?? Anyway....it's going to have to wait until I've saved up enough....I'm thinking at least £800-1k to do the job properly, and I make/modify parts myself??

Multiply it by 4 and you'll be closer. Wheels, suspension, brakes and tyres will set you back your initial sum.

Naaa a turbo badge for tailgate is cheaper than that and you don't need to tell the ins company.

Who will want that or more every year.

I've seen a lot of Gestapo autos... if they pull you and lift the bonnet...

I´ve already got or fitted all the prep...suspension, brakes, wheels etc....and the turbo, manifold, intercooler, pipework etc, I can get extremely cheap...and even genuine Fiat parts I can get at 65-75% off the retail price. And at work I have a welder, plasma cutter, lathe, mill, pipe former...pretty much everything I need....

Also....bearing in mind I´m only looking for a low boost turbo....the most expensive thing I was thinking would be the aftermarket ECU??

Although.....tomorrow morning I finally get to collect my Cinq down here in Spain....just finished having a 1.4 16v fitted.....the engine and gearbox was 80 euros...and fitting it all came to 260 euros....so I might have a play with the idea of a turbo on this one....and perhaps swap the engine with my english cinq in the future....

And there´s no worries with the insurance....I always declare everything....and I´ve already checked with a specialist broker how much it would be....and as long as I keep the mileage down....it is surprisingly cheap:D

Re: I

Describe the spec!

To build a low boost turbo is a waste of time and money -- you'll get more from an N/A 16v. 95bhp or so from a good 1.2, 110ish from a 1.4. Much easier to drive fast, too!

To do a "proper" high boost turbo you need: forged pistons, rods, EN34 valves, bronze valve guides, aftermarket ECU, bigger clutch and flywheel, a few goes at getting the "right" turbo components, several RR sessions. You'll still have issues with the gearbox, eventually. Cheaper to steal a T Jet (and gearbox) out of a 500 Abarth.

In any event you'll need Punto GT or Uno Turbo front brakes, you'll certainly need bigger wheels (even if only wider) and rubber to suit.

At the end of the day, I would like to do it just to have something a little different....if I wanted a "fast" cinq, I would look at fitting something crazy like a Hyabusa engine.....but its more the fact that its something I would like to have a go at. I changed the turbo in my old Tdi...but I just fancy a go at building the whole lot from scratch. I´ve already got some 14x6.5 wheels, plus the Punto GT calipers and grooved discs to suit....although I will probably fit them to the 1.4, as it currently has the 1.1 sporting brakes with drilled grooved discs..

As I said....I think I´ll have a play with the 1.4 I have down here for now.....and I appreciate your point abount the T-Jet.....I work for a Fiat dealer.....so I´ll have a word, as I know we get warranty and recon engines and gearboxes come through from time to time.

For now....I´ll enjoy the difference with the 1.4....:D

Regardless of low or high boost, engine control is the most crucial and in most cases very expensive part of the project indeed. But it is not only the ECU itself, but also paying for the RR sessions and perhaps for mapping if you do not know your way around it.

But it is a good idea to do some research and to know what your options in terms of control are. One option is to peek into Honeymonster's thread for an exteremely decent mid-budget piggy back system that in fact is almost a standalone really.

"And at work I have a welder, plasma cutter, lathe, mill, pipe former...pretty much everything I need...." That alone will save you over a "k".

Most people that done/doing the turbo conversion doesn't have access or the skills of using the machines :). My friend is a pipe fitter, and their welding compared to a mechanic, is a massive difference.

Go ahead and do it!

No one's trying to put him off Ming, in fact I really hope he builds it. But even with all the welding done for free and having the majority of the parts it will still cost way over what you'd expect. I've been very careful with spending and all my fabricating and pretty much all my powder coating was done for free (favours returned). It still mounds up to an unbelievable amount very quickly. I haven't paid full wack for anything and even still the amount I've spent is not something I can post on a public forum in case Mrs. HM sees it. :D

Going low boost would be a massive saving since you won't really need a decomp plate/pistons or an intercooler, oil cooler and their pipework etc.

But it will still cost more than 1k if you tally all the small parts you need to buy up. Flywheels, clutches, fuel pumps, injectors, hoses, regulators, gauges etc. There really is a lot more than meets the eye.

Also with those tools available you might as well go the whole hog, low boost is a bit of a cop out. (y)

Same here :D Towards the end of the project, before the first engine startup, I added up my bills, got pale in the face, threw them out and decided not to think about this ever again. And then I had to spend almost 50% of that more on things I have not anticipated or decided to upgrade. Now, I think I would be able to do it all over for half the total price, but this would still be a lot.
