to fly or not to fly

to fly or not to fly

Watch "ALIVE" before you go ;)

The only problem I have will flying is I get really bored! and when I get bored I start to iritate people :)

I admit I can see why people are scared of fliying but come on, you have more chance of dieing on your way to the airport!

I love flying - bring it on :slayer:

Even recall going into the flight deck of a 747 above the Atlantic years ago - that was pretty amazing, although obviously that has all stopped now.

The whole thrill and sensation is amazing, especially the few moments before takeoff, and then when the engines are on full thrust - and soon after, the drinks trolley comes round ;)

My last plane trip was on an Air India flight, to Toronto, in Feb/Mar this year - full complimentary food and bar, 30 minutes in, 2 cans of Kingfisher lager followed by a chicken curry and naan bread :yum:

Jai, that Paul McKenna book looks very good but I don't think a fear of flying is an irrational fear like, spiders or what ever.
I think it's perfectly reasonable to be scared of being fired into the air at close to the speed of sound in something so big and heavy that if it wasn't flying at that speed, would drop like a huge brick.
That's not a phobia, it's common sense.

Doh! Cmon folks....:) you're many times more likely to have a car accident, but at lowere speeds I accept lol!
Just do it, its starting to sound a bit like the caterpillar who said to his mate "you wont ever catch me in one of THOSE things!" :D

It's fine in 1st or business class, I hate long flights in cattle class but will put up with it to save a couple of grand. It's also pretty safe on any first world airline your chance of being killed is less that 1 in a million. I always try to book direct flights as take off and landing are the most dangerous times. What has really put me off recentley is the chaos and wasted hours and sheer unpleasentness on the ground due to all the "security" which only seems to have presented the bombers with an easier target of queues all round the terminals.

Totally agree very well put, at Naples Airport they were searching very young kids, like babies upwards! And what a rubbish Airport that is BTW!

I know flying is safer than driving, my problem is that I just don't like it.
I enjoy the drive down to Spain or the south of France, I don't enjoy flying there. Why would I want to ruin an expensive holiday by flying?

Someone I met on holiday was going on about the money I'd save by flying, £50 return to Spain or something. Then I asked him how much his hire car was for 2 weeks... £800
Turns out I spent alot less by going by ferry and driving :D .

:yeahthat:

Take off and landing are the best bits! It's the bit in between on long haul that's boring  And the fanny arsing around getting to and from the airport, and the security checks, and the immigration hassle at the other end when you into non European countries.

As has been mentioned, you are MANY times more likely to get killed driving to/ from the airport than on the flight itself.

Flying in a silly passenger jet is about as exciting as taking a bus... unless there are at least two interesting turbulences involved.
It is said that scuba-diving helps in prevention of flight phobia.
If someone tells you the most exciting figure is the loop, do not believe him/her. It is the hammerhead.
If I win a lottery, my first purchase will be:

Just get on the planes, its all good because there are folk like me that tell the pilots what to do, and well we need the passengers to go on and pay the airlines who pay the airports, who pay me! :D

But when the planes crash then the passengers get taken to hospital so I can stitch them back together again and have a job

What do you tell the pilots to do after they tell you all the engines have failed and they are decending rapidly out of control? :p

And how do you stitch back a pile of Karosean burnt flesh that turned into Ash? :p

What do you tell the pilots to do after they tell you all the engines have failed and they are decending rapidly out of control?

All depends where they are, if local and maybe departed from your airfield the wind direction and speed, runway in use.

If not local, say transatlantic, runways lengths ie are they long enough for that aircraft, other local airfields with better facilities, longer runways etc

BUT most importantly, get everything else out of the way and try no to talk to much to the pilot who may be running through check lists trying to regain control etc so you don't need to add to his workload, instruct radio silence to all other aircraft as priority aircraft on frequency, its one thing have one plane crash, its another thing if it hits another plane on its way down causing mid air collision and spreads debris over a much wider whereby the accident not only kills more people in the air, but more on the ground.

But hey, aircraft disasters are very rare, its the fact that they are rare and in general so many die that they make such a big impact in the news.

So on that note it off to bed for me for a good nights sleep, don't have nightmares now
