@matt, bad enough being born between rocky 2 and 3, but not as bad as being born between ROUNDS 2 and 3:)

I do indeed remember that series, have also just ordered a film and american tv series called "then came bronson" doubt if anyone remembers that one.

@stuart, do you remember the acid throwing scene in "big bread winner hog"? That actually caused so much fuss that "hog" became the first ever tv programme to be axed before the end of its run.
Remember another classic black and white series called "Callan"? I think it was the first time the spy world had been exposed and it hinted at some of the dirty underbelly secrets of the goverment. It starred edward woodward as a killer who sometimes vomited with fear before a job, hardly glamourous but probably very realistic. That of course leads us on to "Dangerman" the secret again called john drake played by patrick mgoohan and who later resigned and was shipped off to the island to become number 6.

Hell, I can even remember a series called "mark sabre the one armed detective",lol used to show him driving a little mg one handed and wearing a trilby hat:)

Patrick,

good grief... a Callan fan too! Unbelievable, we seem to have similar taste.

I do recall the "acid in the face" episode of BBH. But my personal favourite was "The Drowning of Izzard"....lifted straight from real events done by the Krays the year before.

If memory serves "Danger Man" was before Callan, both quite brilliant.
These were the first TV series (along with "Man in a Suitcase") where the lines between good and bad were totally blurred. Espionage was a dirty business no matter which side you worked for.
The seventies saw TV criminals get away with their crimes for the first time too ("The Sweeney" being first in that regard.)

Good to know not everyone in BOO is younger than some of my shirts.

If you get labelled a "daft old bugger" I dread to think what that makes me. My youngest reckons I'm a "cantankerous old git" on a good day. Mainly because if I have to get older, then I aim to do so disgracefully!

Cheers,
Stuart.

theres only1 spy series for me and thats MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
War
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing

Lyrics by Edwin Star

Well, I must disagree, one thing war IS good for is giving us cracking films. Some of the best recent war films were brought to us courtesy of the vietnam war. Who can forget some of Oliver Stones finest works?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EPjMNFZFwg

Although we didnt play a part in that one, we did manage to make some stupendous war films such as, Bridge over the river kwai, which belive it or not was made in 1957!! This showed the more human side of war, as did that other great film Lawernce of Araibia which caused quite a fuss as it hinted at lawrences fondness for s & m sex games. Other great ones included a bridge too far, the damnbusters, the longest day ect, all of them dealing with the second world war. Good films that were set in the army but didnt include the war as such were "the hill" with sean connery set in a militery prison and "tunes of glory" set in edinburgh castle

The iraq conflict just doesnt seem to have produced any classics yet, the only ones I can think of include the lousy one called "three kings" and the over hyped jarhead. You cant say its because its too recent because they have already made films about the hijacked flights (by a brit director actually) and that was a pretty good one, but in my opinion stone failed totally with the world trade center film.

The Dambusters...all time classic :) but I hear they're doing a remake :(

"mark sabre the one armed detective" Chuff all to do with me, BTW. :)

The blond one is David McCallum, now appearing in NCIS on Channel 5.

Number 6 was not sent to an island, he was sent to "The Village".
Do you not remember the episode where he escaped The Village, only to be confronted by a mountain range?
The Prisoner was filmed in Portmeirion, North Wales.

Who's Gary Grant? Cary's brother? ;)

Man in a Suitcase - remember that? That poor Yank got beat to a pulp evey week, poor sod!

Z Cars was a good police series when it first started. One or two villains came out of the loo more bruised than when they went in, followed by a smug copper.

Kids programmes from my/our youth: Four Feather Falls; Fireball XL5; Supercar.

Got to say, I disagree. Three Kings was a little gem :)

And I stayed up and watched another 'Nam movie last night and realised how very good it actually was on it's own before the subsequent sequels tarnished the franchise.

The movie ?

First Blood.

Roberto, did you ever read the original first blood book? It had a white cover with bloodstaines on it. I read that before they made the films and troutman actually kills rambo after rambo was wounded killing the sheriff. In the later editions they altered the book to match the film.

I think it was the damnbuster were one of the pilots had a black dog and in the film it was called "******" and he often shouted here ****** to it, but when it was shown on tv recently, they dubbed his voice to remove that bit.

sabre, I knew it was a village not an island, but after misspelling the name of the village thee times, I swapped to an island, lol.

The copper on Z cars ywho used to rough them up a bit was a big called nicknamed fancy, lol used to have a big police dog with him

@Patrick, that Rambo ending was actually made I think but was scrapped because it wasn't audience friendly - too pessimistic.

I also remember the dogs name too, such an innocent age when gay still meant happy lol

Yeah, the book has Rambo killing a lot of people, but the Stallone suggested the "righteous" approach which carries a more powerful & heroic anti war message. Also, Rambo dies at the end of the book. A scene where Rambo commits suicide at the end of the film was shot but dropped. It was later included on an "Ultimate Edition" release of the film as an alternate ending.

Steve McQueen was originally going to play Rambo and Kirk Douglas was signed up to play the Colonel Trautman character :)
