WTF! SERIOUSLY!!

Why did the driver cruise lane then suddenly swerve? why did he not hit the brakes?
Seriously unless there was a serious mechanical malfunction, i feel soooo sorry for the people he's just hit - and made poo fly evereywhere...

What also concerns me is the apparent ease with which that lorry went through the central reservation.
I thought the idea of those honking great barriers was to prevent oncoming traffic meeting you head on in a, potential, 140mph impact.

I thought the same, although its only going to be a max of a 70mph impact if all are sticking to the speed limit ;)
 
If they are both doing 70 then a 140mph impact is possible as sludgeguts says.

yep, standard physics and motion.

70mph into back of 60mph vehicle, both going in same direction works out to be similar to a 10mph crash..

two vehicles head on doing 70 works out to be 140mph

RuSZ what you've said isn't standard physics.

Newtons 3rd law. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction!

The only differences will be mass assuming their not identicle vehicles ;)
 
I did A Level physics, so know that it's not the most accurate description, but will help some people understand how it works.

How does making it out to be something which it isn't, something which is the complete opposite, helping people understand how it works :confused:

The fact remains if that lorry hits another similar sized and loaded lorry at 70mph it is still a 70mph collission and not 140mph.

This is right, if a car hits immovable object at 70mph then it sustains the force of a 70mph collision

If two cars both traveling at 70mph hit head on each carries the force of 70mph but that impact is divided between two cars so law of averages each gets a car sustains a 70mph impact mythbusters proved this with numerous tests (y)

I read it as 140MPH closing speed.. which it is.!!

as you say the forces are @equal at 70MPH each;)

As mass and energy are directly proportionate (thanks Einstein) Obviously you then have to consider the mass of the colliding objects which is why if you have a 2 ton car versus a 40 ton lorry with a total colliding mass of 42tons that colliding mass is divided between the two vehicles so the lorry will exert a far greater force on the much smaller car than if two vehicles of equal mass were to crash into one another, even though the lorry may not be carrying as much speed (56ish mph) as the car (70mph) it still has far more energy.

correct.. (you were comparing 2 cars at 70 MPH each..)

the UK have trialled all kinds of "carriageway dividers" over the years,
from solid concrete to stretched steel cables, they all have their merits and failings,
even a "berlin wall" would have to be 10+ feet tall to have a hope of stopping a truck mounting it..!!

the main reason we've stuck with "armco" - is our roads are just too busy / overcrowded, and it's the quickest thing to replace and get traffic moving again,

go to the continent and its 3 foot of concrete all the way
thankfully we are getting this now on most motorways
