Its not widely advertised (for obvious reasons), but there are tolerance over speed limit, only above which you can actually be *prosecuted* for speeding.
Its not widely advertised because its not true. Speeding is what the law calls an offence of strict liability, in other words 30.0001mph in a 30 limit and you could be prosecuted. However a tolerance is used when setting speed cameras and deciding whether or not to prosecute.

There are two main reasons why a tolerance is allowed. Partly because its not realistic to expect drivers to manage that degree of accuracy and enforcing it would mean people driving well below the limit with consequent adverse effect on traffic flow. Partly because any speed measuring measuring device will have a small error and by giving a tolerance bigger than the machine error removes a possible defence.

Thread wildly off topic - as per usual for the FF - lateral thinkers one and all :D
Legal system in most Western countries is formed out of historical context (especially in the UK with no written constitution) and Judeo Christian tenets (i.e. the Commandments and various fire and brimstone proclamations). The set of laws governing our favourite toys however should surely be seen as an attempt to ensure the maximum freedom of the individual against the competing needs of other individuals. That is I can do whatever I want as long as in doing so I don't affect Joe Blogg's capacity to do the same. I could drive down Oxford Street at 100mph as long as all other road users (vehicular and pedestrian) were not present. Speed limts are in force to ensure that I get from A to B safely without affecting others whose journeys might interact with mine. Tolerance of limits (for policing) is valid for the reasons others have mentioned - legal, traffic flow etc.
Whilst most people will be offended if asked if they have ever shoplifted or committed GBH, most will accept that they break the limit (especially on motorways) from time to time. Why is this different ? Surely it comes down to the whole psychology of the car - the feeling of invincibility, how one's personal space expands to include the car ? My car is a statement of my personality hence the spending of hard earned cash on purely cosmetic alterations and illegal window tints. Others will think it mad : as the Police sang we are all "trapped like lemmings in shiny metal boxes".
One query for JohnW - is the tiniting law based on the driver looking out or Big Brother looking in ? Privacy glass (in all the senses) might be in very short supply in the future in this land of CCTV and snooping councils...

From what I understand the tinting law is based on what you can see out and what you have is the max permitted..the law dont need to see in they just open your door and say your nicked sunshine..:D

I am sure thats part of it but there are two sorts of speeding.
Deliberate when a driver decides to speed and knowingly breaks the law. Accidental when the driver wants to stay within the limit but lacks the driving skills to do so. Shoplifting and GBH are not anywhere near so likely to be accidental.

I don't know as parliament didn't consult me when they took the decision.

Speed limits are an annoyance of mine. Not because I want to speed everywhere, but because it takes some of the skill out of driving.

To drive a car you should be capable of assessing the risks and drive accordingly. A 60mph road does not mean you will be able to do 60mph all the way along it. There may be corners, junctions, villiages etc that you should slow down for. It's a shame the law doesn't reflect this. As long as you're under the posted limit you're safe. (n)

Its partly down to drivers perspective looking out as the darker the tint the less you will see and for police etc to look in. There was a massive crack down on front tints in nottingham a while back after a couple of gang shootings where if they couldnt see the face of the driver then they would pull you as they were of the opinion why dont you want to be seen and what are you hiding from us by having such dark tints.

What the $£*&????

Rubbish, no such excuse, ever. unless your brakes fail going down a very big hill and you are extremely stupid?!

No excuse for speeding. its breaking the law, end of story...:rolleyes:

....Watch me get pulled for speeding and window tints tommorrow! :D

"Sorry officer, I didn't see that small child run out in front of me as I had my eyes glued to my speedometer to make sure I didn't creep above 30mph".

I bloomin' hate those average speed cameras that are creeping up every where. Inappropriate speeding is obviously a Very Bad Thing, but I don't believe cameras are the answer.

Sorry... I off topic and I was just about to go on a rant...;) instead I shall pop out for a night drive wearing sunglasses...

Personally I love those average speed cameras and the panicked look on idiots faces as they realise they have just passed the first one at 80 in a 50 limit, then they have to do 35 all the way to the next camera :D

I agree, its not that I speed in speed limits its just that when your driving through average speed areas 99% of your mind is focused on your speed, not the road ahead! Fortunatly the panda has the 'speed beep' function, which I feel helps!

Another annoying thing is, after a drive to Bristol on Wednesday (to see Deal or no Deal!! :D) I noticed that the highways agency have decided to slowly add these cameras to the entire British motorway network!

Going back to the original topic, I love the look of the wheels and the tinted rear lights.

Have you thought about red mirror cases?

Simon
