Technical Still getting stuck in gear 😭😭😭

sorry no update yest, was totally wiped out, so couldnt get my brain to get on here.

soooo, turns out my Dad had a massive one. Blimey. See pic 1. Sadly, I wasnt used to wiggling things into place, and after ten minites, rage quit.

i went looking for something wider, and BEHOLD, a choir of angels sang as i laid eyes on the bbq burger flipping spatula thing. so i swear, i put it in the gap, was getting the torch, and heard a click. THE POWER OF THE BBQ TOOL WAS SO GREAT IT LEPT INTO PLACE FROM SHEER TERROR ALONE.

i then got over confident itd be done in 10 mins. so yeah.

weirdness during bleeding. (btw the pumping the clutch with it closed worked right away! so yay, ty for that!) everytime i got to 180-200 ish mls it went frothy. like a uti. I was pumping the clutch, and collecting the fluid in the syringe. this happened 3 times, the 4th time i stopped at 160 ish. i spent 90 mins in the midday sun, in an out of the car, pressing the clutch, filling the resevoir, emptying the syringe. my back was maaaaaad. it didnt help that twice the fluid went too low, (user error) and stoopid science sucked the fluid down, and air. so had to restart the whole thing.

anyway, the clutch feels loads firmer, and pings back up like CRAZY. like omg, im having to press super hard now. also, this is weird, but the car feels faster when i change gears. the gear stick feels firmer, but it goes into gear with, idk, more confidence. like, hey, i know where to go now,

so i dont wanna jinx it, as not done a proper test yet, buuuuuuut, just got back from a 20 min a47 run as a test. not many gear changes, but car got hot...i need everyone to remain casual, and not bothered, so the clutch doesnt get big headed. but yeah.

thankyou all so much! ure all amazing! I would never have had the courage to do this without yalls support. πŸ’–

EVERYONE CARRY ON ACTING CASUAL AND NOT FUSSED

just got back from a round trip to somewhere that ALWAYS caused issues when i got there. its 5 billion degrees, and it was the school run. so ALOT of stopping and starting. again ACT CASUAL. not saying too much, but i didnt have to turn her off and on again.

AGAIN, BE CHILL.

also, omg ive never had aircon, and just got it checked. there were no issues, just needed regassing. this must be what it feels like to be rich. driving without knee pit sweat. it was mental.

speaking of a rich, there was a bloke with a porsche who needed 4 new tyres...£1,700. i shouted wtf, as a reflex. he was unbothered. like omg. do you know how many chupa chups that would buy. 😭😭😭

thankyou all again sooooo much! πŸ’•πŸ’–πŸ’•

One gets some idea of the running cost when it's said that owners wanting to drive their Bugatti in the south of France find it cheaper to have it trailered there while they travel by private jet.

I've just looked up the cost of hiring a Chiron for the day; Β£47,900, including 100 free miles. Extra miles are Β£100+VAT. There's also a security deposit of Β£100,000.

Tyres on high end sports cars have always been expensive.
A mate of mine started a S/H tyre business in the late 80s, I was amazed how many dodgy car dealers would turn up for these cheap tyres, all I could think was about the poor sods who spent many thousands even back then for these flash cars and probably showed off to their mates at stupid speeds little realising how crap the four little patches of rubber were that they were relying on.:(

I'm trying hard to remember what it's like. I seem to remember it's rather more like the ball connector on the gearchange cables? it presses on from the side if I remember - been some time since I did one, but I seem to remember my biggest longest thickest screwdriver came into it somewhere - being used as a lever? Or am I thinking of another one. It's not like the VAG one, I don't think?
No, correct.

It's a heavily edited video lol
Hope all four of those pixels help
Don't overdo it with a dodgy back, take time to rest if you need it.
And well done the honest folk of Norfolk (you're lucky The Panda Nut wasn't in the vicin, I bet he'd have scoffed it) I left all five doors of t'Panda open the other night, had to put towels down but still got wet bums
Blast it... I missed my chance.

Hey everyone! Long time no see. ☺️

I was planning on starting to do things on bubbles next month, including digging out the mot advisories, but yeah...here we are.

For about 18 months, when the car gets hot, she gets stuck in gear. The only thing I can do, is stop and turn her off and on again. Obvs this sucks when it happens at speed.

Last year I posted asking for advice, and I changed the clutch slave cylinder. I've avoided long journeys, cos the clutch scares me. It has been fine...until now. I've recently done several 20-30 min journeys, and had a nightmare each time. Today I did a 15 min journey (it's hot out), and it happened. I had to coast into the carpark in neutral as couldn't change gear. I've had to come off the slip road in neutral too. Which is why I was too scared to see if changing the slave had fixed the issue...it hadn't.

I think the next thing I was told to try, was changing the master cylinder. How hard is that to do? Prior to doing the slave last year, I had no car maintenance experience. Taking the battery out was the worst bit. Does anyone have any tips for changing it, and good guides pls? I didn't change the connector bit, and still have some weird swirly straw shaped thing that came in the box with the slave. Idk what it's called.

Thankyou, and hope your're all well! 😊
Hi, I have just stumbled across this whilst desperately searching Google for answers. My 2014 Fiat 500 is doing exactly the same things you describe. I took mine to the garage and 1st they couldn't find anything , second time they replaced clutch and slave cylinder. Β£800 and 3 weeks later it's happened again and the car is back in the same garage, so far they have bleed the clutch and I'm waiting to hear. At this point I have lost all faith in them but feel they have a duty of care, to make things more complicated they are doing my MOT today which was booked previously. Basically I wanted to reach out to you and see if you managed to find the fault? I'm to scared to drive the car any more as ike you this has also happened at high speed where I had no choice but to cruise in neutral untill I could pull over. Really scary and equally stressful when it does it in built up city traffic. I love my little mint humbug but I now dread the idea of driving it :(

It may be related to clutch release arm bushes inside the bell housing.
The arm is slow to return causing the hydraulics to give trouble.
I have had similar on a 2012 VW Golf1.6 and after pattern cylinders and on advice from other mechanics, went down the expensive route of genuine hydraulics, comple pedal assembly etc. Before the correct answer, that release arm bushes.
You may be able to test with slave cylinder off to access movement of the release arm, unfortunately on the Golf the arm is more internal.:(

Thanks so much fof taking the rime to reply. Just to confirm, so I can mention this to my garage.. it could be the release arm? Car mechanics are another language to me. :)

Yes, if applicable to your vehicle.
If you can see the clutch slave cylinder on the outside of the gearbox and can access the clutch release arm to test once slave cylinder is out the way.
Note if it is that , it will involve gearbox out and probably new bushes on the release arm where it mounts in the bellhousing, so not a 5 minute job to fix, but testing for it should only be 30 minutes as a guide.
Basically if release arm is slow to return to released position it encourages the slave cylinder to be "lazy" returning so master cylinder doesn't draw brake/clutch fluid in to function correctly on next stroke of pedal operation.
The clutch pressure plate diaphragm spring will push the arm back so far when pedal released, but not enough to let master cylinder draw fresh fluid in for the next operation of pedal.
The arm should be easily moved with your fingers once clutch slave cylinder out of the way.

OK, thanks for your help.

omg mines a mint humbug too! omg im so sorry it's happening to you too, its soooo scary! 😭😭😭 idk whats worse, dual carriage way, or traffic jam.

yes, dont wanna jinx it, but looks like changing the master cylinder worked. changing the slave alone didnt fix it.

Did they defo change the clutch master cylinder, as well as the slave?

Honestly, I wouldnt trust em either. I paid my garage £50 twice, to be told there was no fault. So i understand where ure coming from. They also do my mot. So ugh. 😩

I didnt know anything about cars until I came here last year, literally for this issue! Everyone here is amazing, and honestly, if you ever wanna try doing car stuff, they will 100% have ure back, as you rant and cry for page after page.

Thanks so much for replying πŸ™‚ what a coincidence! I know, both are horrendous and so stressful / scary. I really don't know anything about cars or have any interest in fixing them but respect to you for getting stuck in.
The garage replaced the clutch and the slave cylinder and it has not fixed anything. It seems they have taken a punt at my expense. They have now had my car since Wednesday and today did my MOT and quoted over £1000 I called another garage and they quoted £750 but I feel tied to this garage as they need to fix the fault 😭
Has yours been completely fine since master cylinder? I had to call the AA to take my car to the garage when it happened last week as I was so stressed and he said it would only be the master if the clutch pedal felt differently but it never does, did yours? Also did yours sometimes become impossible to move unless you switch the car off and on again? Sorry for rambling.. it's been a day dealing with all this car stress 😩 glad you have fixed yours.

omg mine was doing EXACTLY what ures is. the clutch pedal never felt different. always felt the same. it does feel firmer now i changed it tho, but it felt normal to me before, if that makes sense? i guess it got worse over time, and i got used to it? idk how it works tbh, just guessing.

and yes, the only way to get out of the gears being stuck, was to turn the engine off and on again. i loved it when it happened infront of a rough pub at the traffic lights. best. day. ever.

honestly, DONT use the mot garage for the mot work. thats an insane amount money, especially as the other garage is less. are they charging you for each new thing they do to the clutch?

are you able to get a quote from another garage for the master cylinder? do you know anyone who could change it? honestly, apart from the faffing about, it was easy.

maybe start a thread with what needs doing, and price, and ask what people think?

and im the queen of rambling, so never apologise. i know how stressful it is with cars, and im sending you a massive hug. its proper rubbish. πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

sorry if its rude, and you dont have to answer, but what gender are you? just theres a girls fiat group on fb, and everyone asks about pricing and stuff when they get quotes.

It's honestly so good to know I'm not going mad πŸ˜… and hear that someone else has experienced the same stupidly strange intermittent problems as me.
I think a new master will be about £200 but that will take it to nearly a grand with the £780 already spent 😭 One good thing that's come out of today is I have found a really nice garage that I think I can trust moving forward.
The strangest thing about this fault is that no one seems to know what it is. It's making me hate my car as I just feel I can't trust it not to happen again.
I am female but tyring to detox from social media, but I really appreciate the suggestion and the hug πŸ’–
