should be fine, mine went while just setting off at a junction, rang the rac to get recovered and told them belt had gone, and a cocky so and so said "so what makes you think the timing belt has gone " my reply was " cos i have got it in my fecking hand".Yep it's a 8valve, what other damage would there be?
Thanks for the info, how do you set the timing up?
And what's a safe engine?

timing through the bunga bunga hole is for mk1 as far as i know as the marks are basically meaningless unless someone cares to enlighten us
i mentioned cutting belt purely as an anecdote to saying its hard to get belt aligned if you dont have a belt to go by
you dont talk bs i have that badge and proud but hey no one reads my posts anyway look at the thanks we get if unsure

they just go without warning, if your car has done a few miles then replace water pump as well is a option but def belt and tensioner. you dont need to take pump off to do it but if pump goes later will have to take timing belt off to get at it
