I think we should have a maximum sig size, say a maximum height and width, like they do on some forums.

I dont mean to be a kill joy or anything, but peoples sigs are getting sooooo massive that its getting hard to read some threads and soon we are going to be getting one reply per page!

What do you reckon Ben?

I'm not sure TBH, I always persevered  when I was on 56K as i'm a stubborn git that won't let a silly web page get the better of me :D
Hell I used to play quake with a ping of 999 because I didn't know about modem drivers and I still won a few games ( mainly because people couldn't actually see me :D )

If page load time (and server space) is an issue, then there is a lot people can do to reduce the file size.

I just took 2 sig images off this page (Binky and Luke) and resaved them in Photoshop. I got Binky from 22.5k down to 12.5k and Luke from 46.7k down to 12.5k.

I still maintained a reasonable quality (defintely good enough for a forum) but the savings will all add up if everyone cut their file sizes. Depending on the image, some files will reduce more than others but I thought people may find this useful to know that at least something can be done at the creation stage.

Dave & Luke: I am in no way trying to single you out - your sigs were just handy to save to disk. :)

Good call, Neil.

I don't think server space is an issue here, but page load time is for some people.

This debate is not trying to stop people showing their artistic side, and the sigs that have been produced are of a very high standard.

BUT it is trying to find the happy comprimise - trouble is, you can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time.

If there are no sig rules in place, then people will moan about page loading time - these same people may want to see sigs, and not turn them off...if there are sig rules in place, then other people may feel they are too restrictive. Once we find the middle ground, then sorted (y)

I agree, rules never please everyone but I reckon it is not too much to ask for people to give up a little flexibility in order to maintain the functionality of the forum for everyone. :)

I defintely wouldn't have a problem with this! (y)

This may sound silly but by taking my sig off I already feel like i'm becoming detached from the forum that I felt a part of.

ERM  at what point have we said we didnt like sigs at all, i am sure if your capable or creating a nice sig like you had before you can still do one with a smaller file size.

But we're not the big bad mods like some of you like to think, we have to use this forum too, so we dont want to see an end to the sigs, i personally like them, but why some have to be so big is beyond me.

No matter what happens on here, some one will complain, but like stu said we cant please everyone, its not like were banning sigs just trying to keep them to a sensible size... whats so wrong with that???????

Thanks to Sammi, Stu and Neil, you're saying what I'm thinking! I want to see people's creative side. Koa - what is the point in your being creative if no-one but yourself is going to appreciate it? Kind of pointless I would have said, surely you want others to enjoy your work? If you would prefer to keep it for your personal use, surely you can keep it on your hard drive? Then I can enjoy everyone elses creativity :) I don't have the time to persevere either, just because some people get all-day long internet access, I have 2-3 hours per day and would rather use them more wisely than spending the time waiting for a blank page to load. Not getting at you, just repsonding to your points.

Me too Alex ;)

I don't like the fact that they are gone :(, but I agree to an extent with the big bad mod's...If people are struggling to use this website as a direct result of the larger sig's (mine included atm, as I haven't resized it further..) Then we need to seek a comprimise.

I love signatures, and would really like koa and ben to show some form of signature.

I have been thinking (scary I know! :p) ...

IF there is enough space, can the maximum restrictions on the 'Profile Picture's' be increased? This way we would be able to put animated sig's/picture's there, and use standard jpeg one's on the forum?

What do you think?

You can still view mine mate! :) Just click the link! (y)

It's not the same as a picture under your posts, What do you think of increasing the profile picture limit and putting up a stationary image for your sig?

Cheers,

TBH mate I can't be arsed! :( As far as I'm concerned I am no longer involved in this discussion! Sorry! ;)

Have to say from some replies, there's no need to cut your nose off to spite your face. I changed my (250 pixel high, 48kb static) signature when it was deemed too big and popular opinion was against me. Now everyone hates me again because I'm on the moderate side, can't win, ho hum :D

I cant see why people are complaining about there being a signature limit, theres always been a avatar limit and no-one complains about that.

The main point of a signature is a small personal touch to your post, i stress small. Not something which takes up a third of a screen.

Buy a bigger monitor - works for me :D

[sorry, j/k :p]

So, what have we achieved so far? Not a lot, really; but there is now some general bad feeling with members :(
