Hi folks.

When starting from cold, the starter motor of my 2007 Panda 4x4 makes a screeching noise for about half a second or so after the engine has started (like it hasn't disengaged). When the engine is hot or still warm from a recent run it doesn't do it.

Before I go and buy a replacement, can anyone advise if it possible to drop a bit of lubricant into the starter motor?

The starter pre-engagement mechanism can sometimes get sticky. You will have to remove the motor from the engine to check, clean and lubricate.

There are other causes of a squeak on first start when cold

ignition switch as per one of my cars
auxiliary belt
release bearing. Should be different if the car is started in neutral with the clutch up compared to clutch down.

the little gear on the helix can get stiff to slide. Should twist down the helix if you turn it.

normally the starter is Good for 200K.

The helix can be cleaned with a solvent and an old toothbrush. I leave them dry as dust will stick to any oil and you are back to square one a few K down the line. Twist the gear up and put one drop of oil on bearing at the end and clean of any surplus oil
