RGZ the Stilo

RGZ the Stilo

Cheers for the offer Steve. I've noticed a few calipers on eBay from scrapped cars for about that but I'm a bit wary of going down that route. Could well put it on, get a few days or 100 miles from it and it starts sticking again and ruins the fresh pads.

The caliper I linked to, the company offer £15 rebate if you send the old one back, so technically posted the refurbed one would be about £50. Still £30 more but it perhaps offers a bit more piece of mind.

And Ming, not sure about the no-name brand of discs and pads for the rear, but the set with the Greenstuff pads has been bought by 2 people I know of with Stilo's and both raved about them. That and the price were the two main reasons I was considering them though I know what you mean about getting an unknown quantity in terms of the branding and such.

Whatever happens, it'll need changed asap :(

theres nothing scary about calipers tbh, just really 2 (or in some cases 3) big bits of metal and a few rubber seals, one (or 2) bit of metal (the piston/s) gets pushed from behind by the pressure of the fluid, not much more to it than that.

if you get a 2nd hand caliper, you'll know how good it is by how easily the piston moves and how good the seals and piston look, if alls well then it wont suddenly sieze a few weeks later :)

I guess it's mainly just from what I've heard and the fact that pretty much any job on my Stilo goes haywire after a few minutes in. The rears on the Stilo need the pistons winding, which I think is what causes the problems. Some people don't do it properly and force it with a g-clamp, which can cause damage.

I tell you, next car I get I'm making sure Haynes bothered to do a manual for it - it's one thing that's always bothered me about that car, would be so much easier if I had a step by step guide for these things

Well, to keep it all consistent on both sides of the rear, I'll get the option with the 2 discs/set of pads and the refurb caliper. Reason being, that disc's fairly scored now and both needed replaced anyways - original discs after all. So that'd be £105 all in for the bits minus the £15 if I send the caliper back to them. Shall probably be running on fumes by the time I get paid though

As for the electrical situation, apart from the alternator still sounding a bit ill from cold, the readings now check out. 14.5v unloaded and around 12v with absolutely everything switched on, which all seems okay(?)

Well, could be an option :)

Craig's offered to fit the bits for me soon as I get them round at his, which I'd be most grateful for of course. Just not sure about making my way all the way over to Rosyth with the caliper in the state it is :/

Shall let you's know when the parts arrive though and decide how to proceed from there :)

As said guys, I really appreciate any help you's can give me. It's a massive help and whoever's I end up going to, I'll get the beers in :)

I wouldn't drive RGZ with only 3 Brakes Rob... espcially all the way to Kirkaldy as that's where Craig's garage is....
You would be much safer drivng from you're place to Ming's, less distance for a start, so less fuel gets used, & with everything that's going on at the mo with you, I would suggest heading to Ming's.

No offence at all to Craig, like you I respect him for his offer to help with RGZ but, driving to Kirkaldy with 1 Brake which has NO pad is not really the most senciable thing to do Rob.

But end of the day it's you're decision Rob I can't force you to go to Ming's & I can't force you not to go to Craig's.

as long as the front brakes are useable, the lack of a bit of action on one rear brake is totaly negligible, 90% of braking effort is done by the fronts anyway, one rear not working isn't going to fire you straight into a ditch

Well, been driving a number of days with it and though the brake disc is positively grooved now (was needing replaced anyway I reckon lol), no sparks have been flying (yet) and I've not had any issues with the actual braking quality, as it were.

I'm not 100% driving a great distance on it though. It's fair enough for the short runs I tend to do with the minimal braking I actually do anyways, but just wary of the journey length I'd need to do round to Craig's for it. Though as I said, I appreciate his offer of course :)

Parts are in process of being delivered though, so should be with me in start of the week to mid-week hopefully :)

To give you's an idea though, the debris from the disc is adding to the brake dust on the alloy. Due to the weather, it's now a distinct shade of rusty brown in places now. Easy enough to clean though once the new bits are on. I hope. Well, I needed to refurb them anyway

...so, when you's free

...saying that though, I'm working all this weekend but funnily enough off next Monday and Saturday.
