Carbs can spit back....you must have seen flames pop out the top of one before?

only too many times.. i had a bike that over fueled and spit a flame out, only on start up. would set fire to the carb so you had to put it out with a rag before you could ride it. never set on fire when you were riding it, and only did it on the first cold start up. for the rest of the day it was fine.
never did find out what caused it, even after replacing the whole fuel system, carb, tank, pipe work.. everything.

always passed mot though

A little searching in the sticky section and you will find all this stuff...it's why we did it..;)
Thanks for this. Mine didn't have this in it. Mine was definitely just a lump of wire wool that looked like somebody had used it to clean several old barbecues!

But I do know better now. Thank you all for your help.

Belladonna has one of these lttle hinge-mounted aerials, but the aerial doesn't work. I would like to open up the little plastic cover to check the connection, but it is already a bit cracked and definitely brittle. How does it come off? Is it just a levering job?

Slides towards the front of the car.

Well after some weeks of not much happening (due to horrible weather and higher financial priorities) I decided to fire Belladonna up today. A few weeks ago I replaced the camshaft cover gasket as there was some leaking going on. I also took the plugs out and gave them a good clean. Plug number 3 (second along from the timing belt end) was horribly oiled up, as was the airbox. I replaced the air filter, changed the oil and filter as well. With some fresh petrol in and a fully charged battery, and jump battery, she fired up first time.
What I did notice though is that there is some oil leaking, which at first glance looks like from the rocker cover, but is in fact lower down, near the thermostat, I think. Please see my pictures. Is this a common place to leak oil from?
Also I noticed a lot of rusty, possibly oily water coming out of the tail pipe. So much so that when I left it ticking over in one place for 5 minutes there was a brown puddle on the ground. I drove the car just up and down my drive (just in first - I don't live in Downton Abbey!) and there is now a trail of watery / oil in line with the exhaust.
Is rusty / oily water from the exhaust to be expected on a car that has not run properly for nearly 1 year? Or is it a sign of a bigger problem?
Any thoughts on that, and the oil leak by the thermostat gratefully received!

I have just had a look and you could be right. I will get hold of a new seal.
Any thoughts on the rusty water out of the exhaust?

Probably just condensation, ours sometimes do it. Tend to try and give them a blast to clear it, but obviously not possible if it's driveway bound.
