Technical RECALL: Service Solution for Suspension Springs

It's worth noting that the springs are wildly different throughout the Stilo range which I didn't expect. It even seems to be a different spring part no. for a 1.6 without air con and a 1.6 with air con! Very odd
Very valid point which of course tends to point away from the idea that the springs are inherently defective (since our poll shows that failure occurs through many spring types).

The strut design on the other hand is likely to be far more consistent amongst most models (if not all).

I'd love to see some photos of a typical broken spring and suspension otherwise it's plain guess work. (I'll probably have first hand experience soon as I'm still running on original suspension)

I'm having a tyre fitted tomorrow so I'll have a good look around at the suspension whilst it's jacked up

Difficult to believe your suspension lower cup wasn't corroded Phil, you do live in South Wales don't you? :~)

Yes I do live in South Wales is that relevant at all  I'm not the only owner living by the sea and with salt on the roads in fact I have one of the legs still in my garage its a bit bent after argument with a people carrier but no corrosion on the spring seat/cup :) and just for the record I didn't refit an OE strut back on my car when replacing it ;) Edit you are correct about the different springs for cars with air con to I also queries that one and no one could answer me

OK first reply from my mate in Greece Petros he tells me they dont get the problem over there as they are using after market lower springs on their cars (y)

1 to us and 0 to fiat

Will tell you what others are saying when I get replies :D

I find this idea very interesting as it would explain why only (according to Fiat and our own poll for what it's worth) the UK is a problem - being due to RHD vs LHD roundabouts (no that's not supposed to be a joke!)

In fact on that basis, you don't even need to argue that the cup becomes corroded - it only has to be badly designed from the outset. Fiat would obviously have exhaustively tested their design before production but is it just possible they overlooked use in RHD countries?

Actually its for all northern european countries.

VOLUNTARY RECALL SYSTEM
Recall campaigns are launched and monitored as agreed in the various voluntary Codes of Practice formulated from discussions between the Department for Transport and representative bodies of the Motor Industry. These codes set out the guidelines on procedures for the recall of vehicles and components that have safety related defects, due to a feature of design or construction, and which are liable to cause significant risk of injury to the driver, occupants of the vehicle or other road users.

The first code was introduced in 1979, (a link to this code is at the top of the page) and applies to all motor vehicles sold in Great Britain. A further six codes have been introduced since 1982, (details of which can be obtained direct from Vehicle Safety Branch) and cover the following:

· Trailers under 3500kg GVW
· Commercial Trailers 3500kg and over
· Tyres, Wheels and Valves
· Motorcycles
· Parts and Accessories
· Pedal Cycles.

It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to inform the Vehicle Inspectorate when substantial evidence of a safety defect that requires remedial action, has been confirmed. Additionally, evidence may be presented to the manufacturer by the Vehicle Inspectorate as a result of investigations into accidents, and safety defects which have been brought to their attention from other sources.

Sorry if this has already been answered...

I am buying a used Stilo and pick it up on Friday. Its a 53 reg, so registered late 2003. Would I be able to take it to a FIAT service centre for this to be fixed, or have I no chance since I didn't buy it new? Surely if its a re-call they should honour it no matter who the owner? (Thats if, of course, the problem wasn't already fixed by a previous owner)

Any ideas would be great.

P.S. I have just donated. Happy new year!

James

No problem.

So even though I bought the car second hand, i'd still be eligable as I am the car owner and its a recall?

Please could anyone supply me with the "Exact" wording of the recall, with any reason or cause etc as this would be very helpful for future claim?

Thanks
Mark

I contacted FIAT customer services to see if any warranty applied to my Stilo as the passenger side wheel bearing seems to have gone. (grinding/droning noise when moving). They said that sadly no warranty but an outstanding recall for the spring problem. Was told it would be about an hour by my local dealer but waited three. They said the parts delivered had a fault so they had to send to the factor for new parts.

Hi new member here, thanks for the info on the recall, now have a case against Fiat, as 6 days before Xmas my n/s/f spring broke slashing my tyre, fortunatley it was when all the thick fog was about, but at 10.30pm in the middle of no where, had to be recovered, new spring & tyre fitted, been to local Fiat agent !! Stoneacre for the recall and have ordered a new spring for the otherside they say it will be £105 all in.
According to Fiat my car is still owned by the last owner tho i've had it 21/2 yrs !can i claim for the wheel alignment i've had to have £55, also can anyone tell me if there is any aftermaket springs/shocks for the back to stiffen it up as i use it JTD M/W to pull a caravan, thanks sorry for waffling 1st time i've done this

Yep old VOSA site has some surprises.......

ASTON MARTIN V8 Coupe and Vantage
SECURITY OF SEAT BELT SHOULDER ANCHORAGE
The seat belt "B" pillar anchorage may disengage from it's index plate during a frontal impact.

AUDI A3
FLYWHEEL MAY FAIL FIRE MAY RESULT
The two mass flywheel can become damaged because of a non-optimally designed through-flow restrictor in the clutch pressure pipe. This can lead to a total failure of the flywheel and under unfavourable circumstances to a vehicle fire.

BENTLEY ARNARGE T, R AND RL
WHEEL FIXING BOLTS MAY LOOSEN
Due to the possibility of the road wheels having an incorrect finish, the
potential exists for the wheel fixing bolts to loosen. This defect could lead to the road wheel becoming detached from the hub.

BMW 5,6 AND 7 SERIES
REAR SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNTING MAY FAIL
It has been identified that the lower rubber mounting on the metal bush of the rear shock absorbers may fail to meet the quality requirement. Dependant on the mileage and operating conditions the rubber mounting may come completely free from the shock absorber. If this occurs the bodywork would no longer be supported above the wheels, causing it to come into contact with the wheel concerned. Should this occur the possibility exists that a critical driving condition might occur or even the risk of an accident.

CITROEN C2.C3,C4
SUSPENSION SPRINGS MAY BREAK
In the exceptional event of a spring breaking there could be a risk of the spring making contact with the vehicle tyre.

FORD MONDEO
POSSIBLE UNEXPECTED BRAKING.
The yaw rate sensor may be out of specification which may lead to unexpected braking.

HONDA Accord
THROTTLE LINKAGE CONCERN
The throttle return spring may be incorrectly positioned and/or the throttle shaft bearing clearance incorrectly set. It is possible after some period of use, wear or distortion of the throttle body will occur. If the throttle body is not replaced, in the worst case, the throttle may stick.

MAZDA MX3
FRONT SUSPENSION COIL SPRING MAY BREAK
Due to poor adhesion of the rustproof coating of the front coil spring, the spring may rust. As a result, the coil spring may break.

MERCEDES BENZ E Class, SL, S Class, C Class
UNINTENTIONAL DEPLOYMENT OF AIR BAG
Exposure to high humidity conditions may result in corrosion that can cause the drivers front air bag to deploy unintentionally.

PEUGEOT PARTNER
FRONT SUSPENSION SPRING MAY BREAK
In countries where salt is used extensively on the roads, the paint sub layer on certain springs produced over a specific manufacturing period shows very little resistance to corrosion. This can in exceptional circumstances cause a front suspension spring to break, with the attendant risk that, the spring could contact the tyre.

RELIANT Robin
POSSIBLE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL
Poor staking of the steering coupling shaft universal joint bearings can result in inadequate bearing retention. This can lead to excessive steering freeplay, directional instability, and in extreme cases, loss of steering control.

RENAULT Megane II
BRAKE SERVO MAY FAIL
Brake servo may fail resulting in a "hard" brake pedal due to the loss of power assistance.

ROLLS ROYCE Corniche, Bentley Continental R and Bentley Azure
POTENTIAL IGNITION OF FUEL VAPOUR
The potential exists for vented fuel vapour from the leak detection pump to enter a confined body cavity where if it came into contact with an electrical spark, it could, in extreme cases, ignite.

TOYOTA RAV4
FRONT COIL SPRING MAY FRACTURE RESULTING IN THE POSSIBILITY OF TYRE DAMAGE
Due to insufficient surface treatment prior to painting, the paint on the front coil springs may not have adhered properly. This can render the spring susceptible to corrosion in environments where road salt is used. Prolonged use of the vehicle in this condition may cause the spring to fracture, which in extreme cases can lead to tyre damage.

VOLVO CAR 740, 760, 940, 960, 850, S90, V90, S40, S80, S70, V70
DETACHABLE TOW BAR MAY WORK LOOSE
A combination of internal and external forces caused the towball to prematurely detach itself from the towball housing, resulting in separation of the trailer from the drawing unit.

VW PASSAT 2.0 TDI
POSSIBILITY OF FIRE
The two mass flywheel can become damaged because of a non- optimally designed through-flow restrictor in the clutch pressure pipe. This can lead to total failure of the two mass flywheel and under unfavourable circumstances a fire.

And Fiat stilo front springs breaking sod the others cos if they can afford to buy one of those buggers then they can afford to repair it :) we are just ordinary people and some of us live on a budget and don't eat caviar for tea with our chips :nerner: ;)

Coil spring broke over Christmas .. long story...Check out Newbie Central for the full story but this is is what Fiat @ Newport did for me after a bit of a rant from me:

Recovered my car on Tuesday afternoon
Gave me a courtesy Car (Tuesday Morning)
They have fitted 2 new front springs (not in stock so they had to wait for these to be delivered on Thursday).
Today whilst fitting the new springs they noticed that the old broken spring (even though they had fitted the CRAP bracket thing) had still managed to damage the tyre so they replaced the tyre.

The guys down at Newport were GREAT (y) CHEERS lads!! (y)

Yes they are and its been a family business there and a fiat dealership for many years now I think the guy you saw was youngish and going thin on top his name is Craig he was gob smacked when fiat didn't recompense me and didn't pay him for the work on my car  at least you have been successful Jonny and further proof that the spring catcher does not actually catch the spring and isn't worth a light as I suspected (n)
