Panda (Classic) Project Fallout

Introduction

let me introduce to you, the free panda 4x4 which was first spotted >>Here<<.
First off however, here is the plan:

i will (some how) make the panda look "Post Apocalyptic" yet keep it in a road legal state (so no spikes, sharp rusty edges sadly). We have all seen mad max right? all wanted to replicate a mad max style car?
well let me be the first to attempt this with a fiat panda 4x4.

if anyone here has seen the TV program "Defiance", you surely have seen the epic Doge Charger that looks post apocalyptic. i will be trying to aim for the same theme. with such things as an external roll cadge, external metal mesh / grills covering the windows, custom bull bar, reinforced rear bumper made from tubular metal, custom twin output exhaust, and many many more.

this project is going to be undertaken as cheaply as possible (excluding parts necessary for a safe road going vehicle). reusing as many things as i can find (in scrap yards, freebees), true to a real post apocalyptic constructed vehicle. i will also be taking the "rough is best look" (please note, i say Rough not Rat!) the panda its self of course will undergo all the rust prevention Talon went under when i got him.

anyway, i will leave you a few seconds to build up a mental picture of how a panda 4x4 could look in a post apocalyptic landscape while browsing some of these Pictures.......

ok.. that should do.

First off. i need to get the panda all well and good.
a few things are broken... the exhaust, the front suspension on the passenger side, both rear dampeners are rusted out, the doors are shot but i will try to fix them, the gear stick is really loose and all the roller bearings have dropped out, the wiring is a mess (mice attack!), there are no brakes.. and i mean no brakes, and lets not forget the underside rust.

so today i started by stripping out everything inside the car to get a good look at the floor pan and clean it all out (Dragon Man style!) i found the usual rust: the boot floor is a mess, but easy fixable, a seam has gone just behind the drivers seat anything forward of that seems to be OK, and the back of the sills are just gone so i will need to rebuild that.

the engine runs.. the vac advance line has split so its a bit rough on tickover but it seems good. the fuel tank seems good.. all the 4x4 stuff seems good.

i have go a few pictures took free by a professional photographer! (or should i say someone with an epic camera :p)

Here are a few picture, but please check out >This Album<

like i say, check out the photo album.

i will be keeping >Online video logs< of this, so keep a look out on Youtube too.
here are some videos, both are long but the second one is longer!

keep watching guys.. the jet wash will be coming out later today!

Edit:

This is how it looks now: :eek::eek: :slayer::slayer::slayer:

Looks like a tow bar for an army 30 tonne 8 wheeler to me.
Couldn't you find any thicker steel, or is it to stop the body flexing on deep ruts?
Dave

Kolza.
What do you think to increase power.
Punto turbo?
Or
Nitrous oxide?

I have a feeling John is the next Damian Hirst
Dave

Direct injection Diesel Power.

if i could it would be a fully waterproofed >1.6L modern common rail diesel engine with VG turbo and blanked off EGR.

sadly such engines are all fly by wire involving so many electronics now its almost impossible to actually transplant such an engine to a older car.

if i could do my own remapping (just so i can map out the things a panda wont support like traction control) i would give it a damn good go if i had a chance to buy a rear or side crash damaged modern diesel cheap.

anyway, this is what i ended with.. well till i ran out of box and welding wire.

replace that flat bar with yet more box section.

i still need to drill the holes out bigger and finish doing the welding, but overall its looking pretty beefy. its way over rated for the car but will be a nice thing to mount stuff on to. (such as a pump up aerial mast..) ahem i didnt say anything.

cq cq...

could just picture it parked up around Prypiat ;) great picture!

anyway i managed to get some more box, mig wire and some larger tips (i went for 1.2mm mig wire for welding the big stuff)

the result is this:
one of the best welds i have ever done in my life!

so yes this is going to be a multi use tow bar, used for towing and mounting things to.

this is how it ended up:

and a bit of paint.. yellow is what i have lots of so its now yellow!

i know.. i know.. i have not drilled any holes in it yet!! oops! oh well, i need to get it mounted to the car first so i can get it all marked up where the holes need to go. i am going to make little tubes that will sit inside the chassis of the car (maybe welded in!) so i dont crush the box section of the chassis when i tighten the bolts up.
plenty of runs in the paint too.. heh oh well. at the time of the picture the back room of the garage was about 29.c! the wood burner just works that well..

i also need a drill bit big enough to drill through the big plate, that is the same size as tow bar hitch bolts.. sadly i do not have one that big! i need to get the thread size of the bolts i have, then get a drill bit a little bit bigger so i can finally get the hitch bolted to the plate.

before you ask, yeah.. its heavy.. i think the 1.2 engine will be just enough to keep it at the same speed as the 999cc!

ahh so, it has come the time where Talon's MOT and Insurance has ran out (early next month).

So Fallout. i want him on the road and give Talon a rest. for a year..

now i know i have a few things to do on Fallout before i take him to the MOT tester. mostly it is just cosmetic issues but i do need to tape up some wires here and there (for CB and other things that i have not got in the car yet) and i do need to do a bit of welding on the drivers door skin as it has rotted rather a lot since last summer.

i also need to get the indicators for the front fixed on.
as a tribute to the Land Rover Defender, i bought some indicators from one! (well they were new complete units!)
i made some brackets and painted them Yellow (i have so much yellow paint..) and they will be mounted to the bull bar the same way i fixed the spot lights to Talon. nice and simple!

then it will just be as simple as sticking a jerry can of fuel in it, getting it insured.. (guhh.. this is going to be fun) and drive it to the testing place!

now to ring around insurance brokers for modified vehicles and see what comes up!

John, I think its great that you're planning on getting Fallout on the road and I know you are aware that insurance is probably going to be a bit of a pain. I'm not really sure about the cosmetic changes you've made and how or if you need to declare those but as for the engine change I must recommend Admiral, I'm 21 with 3 years NCB and when I had Char' my insurance with declared lowering springs, alloys, front seats from a Seicento and the side stripes my insurance was £360, I called them about 5 months into that year of insurance asking if I were to change the engine (specifically to a 1.2 16v from a mk1 Punto) what the price would be and they surprisingly only wanted an extra £60 which I thought was a bargain for more than doubling the power.
So take what you will from that but if you struggle with the insurance you might be surprised what Admiral can offer (y)

well i have some good news!

the Fallout project is insured! (on the 22nd, monday)

i rang up Adrian Flux. after a mammoth list of every modified part on the car was reeled off they found me a quote for £346.99 (£200 excess not happy about it as i normally have it 0 but i guess its what it is). insane.

i am only covered third party fire and theft, however i am covered to drive other vehicles. and vehicles that do not belong to anyone i live with (like my granddads car) will be covered fully comp ?? but anyone's car i do live with (like my mums and brothers) would only be covered third party.

its crazy, but its insured now.

i have a little work to do, but i will be ringing up the MOT place soon to get it booked in.

Not too bad actually! Two days and should be sorted.
