Panda (Classic) Project Fallout

Introduction

let me introduce to you, the free panda 4x4 which was first spotted >>Here<<.
First off however, here is the plan:

i will (some how) make the panda look "Post Apocalyptic" yet keep it in a road legal state (so no spikes, sharp rusty edges sadly). We have all seen mad max right? all wanted to replicate a mad max style car?
well let me be the first to attempt this with a fiat panda 4x4.

if anyone here has seen the TV program "Defiance", you surely have seen the epic Doge Charger that looks post apocalyptic. i will be trying to aim for the same theme. with such things as an external roll cadge, external metal mesh / grills covering the windows, custom bull bar, reinforced rear bumper made from tubular metal, custom twin output exhaust, and many many more.

this project is going to be undertaken as cheaply as possible (excluding parts necessary for a safe road going vehicle). reusing as many things as i can find (in scrap yards, freebees), true to a real post apocalyptic constructed vehicle. i will also be taking the "rough is best look" (please note, i say Rough not Rat!) the panda its self of course will undergo all the rust prevention Talon went under when i got him.

anyway, i will leave you a few seconds to build up a mental picture of how a panda 4x4 could look in a post apocalyptic landscape while browsing some of these Pictures.......

ok.. that should do.

First off. i need to get the panda all well and good.
a few things are broken... the exhaust, the front suspension on the passenger side, both rear dampeners are rusted out, the doors are shot but i will try to fix them, the gear stick is really loose and all the roller bearings have dropped out, the wiring is a mess (mice attack!), there are no brakes.. and i mean no brakes, and lets not forget the underside rust.

so today i started by stripping out everything inside the car to get a good look at the floor pan and clean it all out (Dragon Man style!) i found the usual rust: the boot floor is a mess, but easy fixable, a seam has gone just behind the drivers seat anything forward of that seems to be OK, and the back of the sills are just gone so i will need to rebuild that.

the engine runs.. the vac advance line has split so its a bit rough on tickover but it seems good. the fuel tank seems good.. all the 4x4 stuff seems good.

i have go a few pictures took free by a professional photographer! (or should i say someone with an epic camera :p)

Here are a few picture, but please check out >This Album<

like i say, check out the photo album.

i will be keeping >Online video logs< of this, so keep a look out on Youtube too.
here are some videos, both are long but the second one is longer!

keep watching guys.. the jet wash will be coming out later today!

Edit:

This is how it looks now: :eek::eek: :slayer::slayer::slayer:

another update, this time i have put all the calliper together and installed the new pads.

all the welding in the front wheel arch is done and i am half way through undersealing it.

i am waiting on the hub carrier's resh coat of paint drying before i can bolt everything together again.

stuck the drive shaft in too, looks nice :D

anyhoo heres a few pictures..

ok guys.. i have some important news!

all the wheel bearings on a 4x4 fiat panda are the same! they fit both half shaft and drive shaft the same, they have the same bolt pattern, and both have the little cut out to remove rear brake shoes.

the rear axle oil seal is a separate seal with nothing to do with the bearing.

i have made a video of it, and will post it up when it is rendered and uploaded.

spread the word guys.

All the same except of the groove in the rear one ,which matches the small ring in the rear axle flange....not present at the front bearing . The "internals" of the bearings are the same but again only in my opinion.

the front wheel arch is done! tick that off the list. (the only thing i need to do in there is fit the plastic inner wheel arch trim and bleed the brakes when i have sorted the whole system)

i also got a nice little 12mm Allen key socket so was able to undo the gearbox sump plug. i have not checked the oil yet, i just left it draining.. will take a picture of it when i do.

to be fair, there was more filings on Talons sump plug!

i have also started working on stripping down the suspension to replace the broken leaf spring. while i am at it, i will give the rear brakes a complete overhaul

spot whats missing!

and the new(er) spring ready to go in..

as you can see, i still have welding to do. i keep poking at the sill every now and again and doing little bits on it but i will focus on that when i have done all these jobs.

more pics to come later on today :)

I'm guessing it's your middle spring that has snapped? I have had to replace both my springs in the past year and a bit. What car are you using as a donor source to fix/replace the broken leaf?

ok, so the rear brake is fully rebuilt heres the pictures:

as i said before, all the rear brakes came from off Bex. the drums, shoes, and springs were replaced but because the slave cylinders were seized the shoes were only being used for the hand brake. they are still in good condition as you can see.

just mixed blue and yellow together.. that is what came out. i would have liked it to be a little more green and less pea colour though. lime green would be best.

i remembered i cut out this rust hole when i first got the car. this was shiny metal.
this just shows how much a car can rust if the metal is left bare. keep in mind that this has never seen salt or roads. just rain splashing from the floor up on it.

well today has been nothing but sill work.

if you remember how the sills were to what they look like now, i think i did not do too bad.

yes i did repair them in a lazy way but they re solid enough to jack up on now (tested every 5 inches apart with the car pretty full of scrap metal.. yes that includes a friend and myself jumping on the door sill to see if we could bend it.)

looks like hell but that is the effect i am after..

cover your eyes guys.. some people may find this offensive:

so yes, the welding on this side of the car is complete. all that is left is to rust proof it and spin the car around to do all of this on the other side!

that is black hammerite i have slapped over it. tomorrow i will fill it full of cavity wax till it flows out of the holes that fit the plastic trim to.. well not that much but i will fill the sill up by blocking off all the holes.

one thing about those fuel pumps.. they dont half supply a good flow rate.

think ill do the doors too.. i want to keep them at the level of rust they have. full of holes.. but still solid.. looks good.

this thread will be going dark for a few weeks, me and Talon have some travelling to do.. dont worry with the power of a in car laptop charger, wireless hotspot and 3G coverage, i wont be far from the forum.
just wish i had them marbella seats.. converting talon into a bed will be.. difficult. may have to fall back on the "blow up" tent.
sadly it'll be a full wagon so i cant really offer any help to the panda express.. i am travelling south though to the home of the pirates. should fit in well hehe.

ill try not to blow up any ignition modules.. though i am packing a few..

so as most of us know, i have been away for 2 weeks. not from the forum, but from the project.

but i am back now. hence all of the following pictures.

when i got back i managed to get fallout turned around so i could work on the passenger side.

i started from back to front.

so this is how it goes..

i have just got to ask myself,
Who the hell designed this:mad::mad:... and how the hell did they even get it to bolt up tight??!!:confused:

everything just kept slipping off!

even stilsons!

angle grinder time! soon got it off.

no messing!

anyway.

bad news, i found a nice bit of rust right above the front leaf spring bush on the chassis. great, thanks for that.

but ohhh whats this??!!

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

panda gods! they do exists! :worship::worship::worship:

the bolt came out so easy! and the leaf just popped out of the mount easy peasy!

here is the rust in question:

bit more of a close up...

a picture of the seam.. it is rough but easy saveable

i have also started work on the front wheel, hub, drive axle, and brake.

the wheel bearing on the pass front was totally shot. grindy goodness style. still spun easy though but had play in it. so well i have it to bits, may aswell change it!

was looking through BEXes thread and saw that the wheel bearing on one side was changed. so with that i took a trip to the shed and retrieved the whole of the hub complex with calliper and started to break it all down to get to the wheel bearing. sure enough it ran smooth with no grinding or play :D happy days.

though when i got down to it, i couldn't help but notice how different it looked, check this out guys.. the type i have always known is on the left..

funny huh? well all the bolt holes line up and it feels good so i will clean it up and use it on the fallout project car!

so all i need to do is clean everything up, de-rust and paint it all up!

check these pads that came out of the calliper not the worst i have seen but hmm nice how one is worn but the other is not:

oh and how about this then guys! a never before seen by me, a complete brake disc dust guard! wow!

wow that was a long post!

oh and i think i have come up with a name for the car. now we all know the project name is Fallout... but the car its self was un-named.

i think the name Ratchet suites the car well.

after all, it seems to be all i do with it!

what do you guys think?

stand by for a video!
