I stand partially corrected - sure there used to be something about fog lights mounted higher... but not in those rules Chris's linked to. My Polo many years ago had fog lights mounted in the grille, alongside the headlights, and I was led to believe that meant they could be used more.

However, on the Cross, they are mounted at the same level as the headlights, in the protruding 'pods' above the bumper line (and there are headlight washers on those pods too). The indicators are in the bumper where the fogs go on other models -- or at least they were on the one I looked at at the dealers.

Does this Fiat photo (below) help make it clearer? This was the all-black Monster version, but the front is the same as the Cross

As to viscous coupling/diffs/electronics, I'll take another look -- gives me an excuse to go back again! I did look underneath the other day, and apart from the different sump guard, at a very quick peek it all looked similar to mine. I may be wrong though... Thinking about it, there would need to be something to detect that the rear wheels were being driven as well as sensing if one of them was spinning in order to work correctly. So that may be the wiring LittlePip can see by the diff?

I would have loved a Panda Monster even more than the Cross!!!!!

I've had a settlement figure on my Eleganza - 8 1/2 grand! That'd leave me nearly 19k to pay all out!!! Cant afford to do it unfortunately!!!!!

I'm not sure if i've read it wrong, but your eleganza must be worth something so that will come off the finance owed won't it? Also you have paid something off the finance (i'm guessing) so that will come off what is owed too won't it?

Did you pay list price on the eleganza?

Never thought about the resale value of my car. I was offered 5K for it when it was 6 weeks old! I got a 27% discount on the actual 10.5K it should have cost. Even so it's still gonna cost a fortune.

Well i'm no expert, but being in a similar-ish situation myself with an 8 month old MJ i might be swapping for a 100hp (if it ever arrives) I would guess that either you haggle on the trade in price or you haggle on the new car price and find some compromise.

For me if i can get the loss of trading in my car/settling the finance to not much over a grand i'd be pretty happy. Alternatively if i can get the price of the 100hp down enough, that would also lessen the blow a bit.

Were you on a 0% finance deal?

I already have a car which I won’t be selling. But for me the Panda makes sense as a second car, even though I am single. I travel around a lot and the security of being able to get to work and home again in virtually all weather conditions and at any hour (lot of post midnight finishes) can’t be overstated. My plan is to try and find either a very strong discount on a new or pre-registered 4 x 4 and keep it till the wheels fall off. My theory is as I have a car on a PCP and currently doing around 7K miles per year over the agreed amount, I am eating heavily into the cars residuals (It would probably cost me money if I chose to hand it back) so a second ‘cheapish to run’ car, would offset some of the depreciation on my main car. Hopefully over the years the Panda will eventually pay for itself. I guess this sounds like I am trying to justify the purchase of one to myself, but I have tried to remain objective about it. Honest:)

Just looking on FiatSupaSaver.com the 1.2 4x4 can be had for £7695 (list £9864). Although the official prices haven't been published on Fiat's or the SupaSaver site, with speculation of a £13k list price, I'm wondering if the 1.3 MJ 4x4 is worth the 3 and a bit grand extra premium.........

Chris

To Most Easterly Jon -- I'll edit the photo in a bit, but for now... The outer round headlights are divided across the middle, the upper part being dipped beam, and the lower part the main beam 'driving lights'. The inner pair of lights in pods are the front fog lights, and the lights at the bottom of the car (where the rest of us get fogs) are the indicators.

Price: Palmers of Watford said £11995 to me, but no doubt the metallic dark green is an extra, plus reg fees etc. This makes it maybe £2100 over the list price of the 1.2 petrol 4x4. But then, compare a petrol Dynamic and an MJ, and the diesel there is about £1000 more. Then, add the air con, diff lock, sliding rear seats and you're about there? I wonder if Supasaver will be able to (1) get the Cross and (2) discount it by a similar amount (if my maths is right, they take over 20% off the petrol 4x4 -- that would bring the Cross to around £9400)

Jon

Here you go: found these pics on the web which make it clearer. In the front view, you can see the dipped beam is on and can see the main beam driving light (the unlit lower part of the main round lights). The fogs are in the round pods, and here, the indicator orange can be seen.

In the rear view, showing the Cross's distinctive rear light units (from the Fiat Coupe?), the upper red lights (on in the picture) are brake and tail, lower are indicators with reverse or rear fog sharing the circle. The reflectors move to the bumpers. The panels above the lights are a slightly metallic grey plastic.

(Just noticed: this Cross seems to have the Skydome roof too... an expensive option to add I guess!)

[edit: for an even clear pic, see here - note its 1600 pixels wide though! -- http://www.hyts.hu/kl.php?kep=autok/fiat/panda-cross-2005/fiat_panda-cross-2005_m4.jpg&kid=19347

Nice video showing the Cross in action here: you can see the braked rear wheel clearly at several points. Mind, given that its going downhill, the 'normal' 4x4 Panda should behave like this too, as the driver's foot is clearly on the brakes anyway. The roads of Hertfordshire aren't quite as bad as this -- yet!

not quite the normal abs would see a locked wheel an release the brake on it so it would carry on trailing round with the diff at the same speed as the other wheel i would expect and

not that it would make any diference in a down hill breaking situation what the wheel was doing it's off the ground anyway

The basic price of the Cross is £11995 as stated the ones in the showroom have climate etc bringing the price to £13K, the ones delivered to the showrooms so far all seem to be well specced. I thought climate was standard but it isn't. There seems to be little added unlike the 100HP and in standard trim is nearer the dynamic spec than the eleganza.

Thanks for comfirming this, and Alan, and sorry for doubting everyone

But is it only me who thinks the indicators are in a awful place?

did i hear if the fogs or (driving lights) are above a certain height they are allowed to be used all the time in certain countries there fore avoiding breaking the law whilst using them to get some extra vision of road or on some sort of out door pursuits

althou i was under the impression that in this country it's perfectly legal to use fogs as driving lights anyway

more to the point if you were to use them in the fog they would be much less effective

fogs are set low to avoid light bouncing back to dazzle the driver in much the same way a camera flash is set away from the focal lens

As above, fog lights are just that ;) If they're driving lights, they should only come on with the main beam for additional lighting and therefore do not need to be adjusted to prevent dazzle to oncoming vehicles and can be as bright as like, etc.

Fog lights work best closer to the road and driving lights work better at or above the level of the headlamps :D

Chris

Nope, you can't use fogs all the time. There's some quotes in the fog light thread about legality.

If you have auxiliary driving lights and not fog lights, it's a different story.

so what's the difference

my front fogs come on with the side dip and main beams if i want

my rear fogs come on with dip and main only unless i'm using front fogs with side the relays in the glove box allow this setup to work

so what's the difference

See them lights in my grille below, they are driving lamps. Dipped Headlights emmit 110 watt of light. Then when I flick on my main beam they come on with the normal main beam which means that instead of 120 watt of light being emmited it doubles to 240 watt! ;)

Makes the road ahead look like daylight at night (y)
