General New Ulysse Connect Nav +

Hi,

Checked my disk and system - 5.31 it is! I presume that any updates are given to current owners as well, and not just those who happen to buy a car at that point in time. If only Fiat knew themselves.

Sorry Stuart trying to type with baby on my lap, he's knows more than me already. Anyway Stuary is a good nickname.

Poggy

Ha ha! Our two have just gone to bed, although my youngest nearly pulled out the power lead to the laptop just before he went [not good when the battery in it is useless, the laptop I mean]!

My wife has a few nicknames for me as well! Er....

Woo hoo! Finally got Connected today after many back-and-forths with a jolly bloke called Henry in Milano. Not helped by Vodafone deactivating one of my multisim cards during the process, thanks V.

Now, I wonder how often I'll use it?

felix

Hey, you spoke to Henry. He is a nice guy, although I still feel that the South African girl sounds nicer! Can't remember her name - Daniella or summat, or is that the other one?!

Stu

Woo hoo - Connected today at long last! Actually managed to do at this morning before leaving for work [it is my wife's car, so always awkward to get my hands on it]. Only took about 5 minutes!

Now, as Felix said, will we use it? Saying that, got a few long trips planned with family in the next month or two - bound to try out the travel/weather service with it.

Hi,

It is cheaper than directory enquiries when your out and about, only costs a text message. I am going to Wales for the day for work so I will try the traffic monitoring.

Poggy

That's a very good point - saying that, I always use bt.com for directory enquiries coz that is free [subject to number of searches a day me thinks] - but well worth considering.

Did you know they provide a type of concierge service - they will book hotels/restaurants etc for you if you say where you are going? It will be interesting to see what rates/criteria they use for that - imagine going up to Bradford and saying you want a table for two in an Indian? Um.... Now there's a thought!

Was on the M4 this morning, going west from the Smoke, thought I'd check the traffic. Hit the Connect button at about 6.30am. Nothing happens for a while...then I get a text saying "We are unable to contact you by phone, we will k" (assume "eep trying"?).

Have not heard anything more. 'Enry, where were you at the Newbury roadworks?

felix

Hi,

They are Italian, so they won't be there at 6:30am. Don't try on a Friday afternoon either.

I had the same problem a couple of times, but I didn't wait and just pressed the button again. It worked the second time.

Poggy

So I tried it on the way home, and spoke to Paulo (4pm Friday).
He was fine, and told me about all the bad stuff on the M4.
However A roads were more tricky, and he misheard my 3-digit A road, and I didn't catch his pronunciation of the 2-digit A road he then told me about.
It's not an entirely ideal situation, discussing UK roads with a guy in Milan at 70 miles per on a cellphone line.
Still, used sparingly and at the right times it could be very useful.

felix

Haven't yet tried the travel service yet, but I thought it worked like this -

A destination is set in your SatNav - you press Green button, and say you want 'follow me' messages until you get to that destination - surely you can't give them road numbers, because why would you know them? OK, local knowledge and common sense on the motorways, but I don't know every A road around the country. Or do you have to explain to some guy in Milan the exact destination [i.e. not taken off SatNav] - could be interesting.

We are going up to North Yorkshire soon - will try it then!

Stuart

The funny thing is, I don't know if any of us know all the features [bar Fiat Expert?] - yet it only costs 10p or so to send a text!

My local dealer was really excited about a month ago when they gave me a glossy Connect Brochure - trouble is, looked nothing like the version I had - think it was what the Stilo had in it! Really useful. Their website is better.

Stuart

Hi!

Used the Connect 'follow me' service at the weekend. Bit of advice - start this before you leave because belting down the A14 at 80 and trying to explain to some Italian where you are and where you are going is not ideal.

Apparently only available until 11pm - unsure whether this is local time or not. Also, even though they can tell where you are from GPS, they are unable to read your destination from SatNav. Ended up spelling it for them in radio-talk!!!

Overall, not bad. Got three alerts on way up to North Yorks [2 re slow moving traffic, other re roadworks]. The roads were generally clear anyway, so can't really comment if it worked if there had been a jam!.

I presume they check you every so often, compare your current location to intended destination, and check road conditions accordingly!!!

I've had my Ulysse Eleganza (pretty much every extra added - would have had a Prestigio but it only came with 6 leather seats, and I wanted 7 non-leather seats). It was ordered in March, and Fiat even refused to build it twice ('why not order a Prestigio?'). Eventually got it in September, and the dealer even fitted a twin-electric tow bracked as compensation for the messing around (I wanted one anyway, so nice touch).

It was ordered with long load cover - finally got that a week ago. I wonder if Fiat didn't place the order on the manufacturer of the part until they had enough customer orders to meet the minimum order requirements from the manufacturer? It's nice to be able to put things in the back without them being on display at last, and with a bit of careful positioning, I can even leave the 3rd row of seats (folded up) in and have the cover in place!

Regarding the warning message on start-up - there's something the dealer can do on the diagnostic rig to turn that off (mine did it for me a couple of days ago - I was so glad to loose that 'feature). They were finally told how to do it by Fiat after chasing for nearly 3 months!

Regarding the Connect Nav Plus thing - I also took a while to get connected. Dealer didn't have the set-up forms that needed to be completed. Finally got all that done yesterday, and agree with everyone's comments on the service. Looks good, but best done before you start the journey. Used it on a trip from the Midlands to a place near Heathrow this morning - got fog warnings, an accident alert, and a couple of "how's the journey going" calls to boot - and they programmed the SatNav system for me to save me faffing around with that dial! I hope I end up speaking to Daniella a lot - sounds nice, and very helpful!

Not had any real problems with the car yet - I've been driving MPVs for some time, almost exclusively Renault Espaces, until they changed the style for the new version released this year. I think it's now one of the ulgiest cars they've done in a long time, so wanted to switch to something else. After doing some research, decided that the Ulysse/C8/807 was the best competitor out there, and the Fiat option was cheaper than Peugeot and Citroen, so as a company car driver, taxed on the value of the car (and emissions), I went for the one that I could get the best set of options in and still not have it cost as much as my old Espace. Also, the 2.0 diesel from Fiat is slightly better on emissions than the ones from Peugeout and Citroen....

It's also nice to see a company supplying a proper alloy spare wheel rather than one of those poxy space savers!

I have three niggles (although one is more of a feature request).....

1) Wouldn't it be nice to have the 'lock' button close the electric doors then lock the car?

2) I have an annoying occasional internal squeak when turning left. Not managed to isolate it yet.

3) I'm getting fed up with the occasional bursts of silence from the radio/CD when it picks up an RDS transmission that it can't lock on to. Most RDS radios do that in the background then interrupt you when they have the broadcast. Apart from not using RDS, is there any way to stop this?

... and thanks to all who have explained about the tyre sensors - I did wonder about them.

John (forum newbie!)

John,

You mention folding the rear seats up with the luggage cover in place. Are the seats folded in the table position or the wallet position? I have not tried too hard but it looked as though the wallet position would put them above the line of the luggage cover.

Lou

Hi both of you!

I agree with Lou - we got our luggage cover delivered recently and there is no way it will go with the seats up properly! It does when in table position, obviously. Haven't yet tried it with seats in wallet position, only because we always have too much luggage [i.e. double 3-wheeler pushchair] that we can't even attempt to use luggage cover!!!!
