I give up, there are strange goings on, on my home network setup, I need help.

There are 2 PC's running Windows XP Pro and 1 Laptop running Windows XP Home, all are using Service Pack 2.

This computer the one I'm using is the Host Computer for the Shared Internet connection. The Internet cable (RJ45) goes in this computer Via a Network Card.

There is another Network Card in this computer that plugs into a Mini Switching Hub.

All the other computer in this house plug into that mini switching hub.

There is a Firewall Running on the Host machine only (BlackICE) all the client computers have the built in windows Firewall disabled.

The Host Machine has been set up to allow other computers on the Network to Share the internet connection.

The Client machines have been set up to connect through the residential gateway so that they can access the internet.

The Host machines firewall has been set up to allow all connections in the home network range to be able to connect to the host computer e.g. No clients will be blocked from the host.

The other computer can only connect while the Host computer is switched on (This is why some of you see me online on MSN ALL the Time)

Hope I didn't miss out any Vitals.... Now onto the problem.

The PC using Windows XP Pro SP2 never has a problem connecting to the internet, you swtich it on it connects.

however the Laptop using XP home SP2 seems to never have internet once its been turned off for the night then turned on in the morning or restarted or anything. it loses its connection sometimes 3 times in a day.

The problem the Laptop states when it loses its connection is that it cannot connect to the Primary Gateway.

When I did over come this by putting static netowrk information on the laptop it them complained about the DNS.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

put static info back on the laptop if that sorted it.

use 195.112.4.4 and 195.112.4.7 for DNS

not sure why it'd randomly not be able to connect to the gateway. It'll be windows playing silly buggers. its probably because XP home is crap..

this happens in my house, the answer is...

Micro****s ****ing ******** OS always messing stuff up... it might just be an xp home issuse as both laptops in my house always lose connection and i get the blame, after a restart they work fine... i'm running a windows 2003 server (stupidly) my machine with xp pro sp2 and 2 laptops

ok I've reset the Laptop to Static and used ben's advice:

Use the IP address of the host internet machine for the DNS (it will relay all requests...)
and used this as the primary DNS and used arc's advice:

use 195.112.4.4...

and put it as the secondary DNS.

It works for now but rest assured I think ryan is spot on
