I reckon you should live with it until something breaks, then get it fixed under warranty, at least they are aware of your concerns so shouldn't be a problem getting it fixed if it goes pear-shaped

What if it breaks in 10 years time though? It's also a real pain, and won't look good when I'm doing a driving test etc. I really want to get it sorted before the 2nd year warranty is finished (it's a dealer warranty after the 2nd year).
If it breaks in ten years time, you'll have had your use out of it. Are you really going to keep the car ten years?

well put it in to the dealer and tell 'em not to give it back 'til it's fixed

Had it for about 16 months so far. My last car was 9 years old when I sold it. I wish I didn't have to sell it, but it was rusting (due to dodgy repair before I bought it), and it was a bit slow, so it had to go sooner or later. A modern car should still be going strong after 10 years if it's well maintained etc.
I may not keep the car for 10 years. If the gearbox was good, and I liked the car then I would probably keep it a lot longer than 10 years. The problem for me is that older cars are better than newer cars, so in 10 years time I won't want to be buying something new!
To be fair, your car is designed to last ten years, so I wouldn't expect it to be anywhere near as reliable after ten years really. Bits will need replacing.
Your logic about older cars being better than newer cars is utterly and completely flawed! Would I have bought a Fiat ten years ago? NFC. It's only because the standard of cars has improved so much in the last ten years or so that I was prepared to give it a go. I'll be chopping it in not long after the warranty runs out though for another new car.
Older cars are not better than newer cars, that is just rubbish. Sorry.
Was thinking about your comment about changing the gear oil. Changing it won't make any difference to the issue, but you will be able to see if there are any filings in the old oil once it's drained and if there are that would point to something grinding.
