Just removed mother-in-laws gearbox following clutch failure and the shaft that the thrust bearing travels on is damaged. Is this replaceable as I bought a second hand gearbox and after waiting a week from a reputable breakers the new one fitted pours oil out the input shaft bearings and seals.

Just thinking it might be better to repair her own if it’s possible ?

2012 Panda 1.3 diesel

Many thanks

You have two gearboxes, it's easy enough to swap the whole bell housings over

No it's not easy to fix, the release bearing tube is machined directly into the casting

Try wiggling the input shaft first there should be no noticeable movement left right or up and down

Assuming it's okay I would replace the three seals, change the bell housing, fit and forget

Thank you was hoping to return the one I just bought as it was expensive but if I need to I guess changing the front over would work. The gearbox for a 1.3 diesel is far higher than a petrol so I guess they must be prone to failure

The one that's leaking is also repairable

Bearing
3 seals

Slightly more work, as you have to take the bell housing off but then remove a bearing

The might give you a partial refund instead of the bother of returning

A cheap scrap gearbox with a good release bearing tube might be the way to go and return the one you have, probably any fiat 1.3 will do

Out and about at the moment, I am pretty sure the bell housing on the diesel is unique but will check when I get home, from memory the starter motor location is different

As suspected the bell housings are different

Petrol Vs diesel

Here's what's involved in charging the seals and bearing

If there's no outer race left or it's too loose to use a bearing puller on the bearing itself, removing the inner left on the shaft is a bit more of a pain, still not that bad with a hammer and chisel

I would say changing the bearing and seals is easier than changing a clutch on a drive

I do the drive seals with a long bar and the gearbox fitted back to the car, I don't undo the plate it sits in
