Any recommendations for gearbox rebuilders 150 mile radius of Birmingham.
IVe got the usual c510 5 speed manual box used in lots of fiats and want to fix a whine thats tiresome on longer runs. It does it in every gear.
It doesnt do it when you lift off the gas and coast or coasting in gear but with the clutch down. Only does it when loaded or maintaining road speed. So im thinking its the differential bearings that needs renewal. I could do that myself as they are available but shimming up and setting the preload is definitely beyond my pay grade. The fluid is at the correct level.
Any thoughts? Happy to put some mo ey into sorti g it as the gears themselves are working all fine so dont fancy gambling on just sticking a secondhand unknown box in.
Was also thinking of having the car test driven first so any potential rebuilder can hear whats going on before I remove the box.

Although they are all the same same basic gearbox

The ratios are not

The none eco 1.2 share the same as the 500 1.2 as an example

I paid £60 for a second hand one, cheaper.than getting one rebuilt

I don't know of a rebuild local to you, a look through the yellow pages is probably the best option is, there's some recondition ones on ebay

Run the engine in neutral and listen to the gearbox (bonnet open). If you hear a rattle it's probably the gearbox input bearing. Get a friend to put the clutch pedal down. If the noise stops, you need a new input bearing. If the noise gets worse, you need a new clutch release bearing or maybe a new clutch of the centre is breaking up.

Replacing the input bearing does not need a specialist. It's fiddly but not hard to do. Replace the oil seal as they go hard with age and eventually take out the clutch. Older Pandas have a small input bearing that's very sensitive to oil level and probably gets shielded from oil spray by an adjacent gear wheel. Some models** have a larger bearing that seems to have solved the problem.

** Six speed in 100HP and the 5 speed used in Multijet have a larger bearing.

Its never 100% certainly

Whine under acceleration
Quiet clutch down
Quiet coasting
Same in every gear

Is classic of a final drive problem
