So, today was LRB's metaphorical trip to the dentist - yup, you guessed it - MOT! :(

Thankfully she flew through (I did re-attach the legal number plate!!), in fact the tester said that she was so clean he could not believe that I use the b every day!!

I did have to buy 2 x new front tyres though as they were both on the limit, also have to replace a CV boot that has split (must have happened in the past two weeks as I was under the car 2 weeks ago).

I am a bit miffed about the tyres as they have only managed 5k, I know I like the loud peddle but I don't wheelspin, the old ones were Marshall budget tyres so I can only assume that they are a cheap, soft compound and therefore did not last - replaced with a pair of Goodyear's.............

Excellent news - it's always a relief

I have four Goodyear Eagle F1s on mine and am very pleased with them. Awsome wet weather grip and a sexy tread pattern. Seem to be lasting well too. Good choice(y)

I will let you know how I get on with them, already noticed the difference in the 1/2 mile drive home from the tyre fitters!

I have only gone for Goodyear Eagle NCT 5's - I gave the garage a budget and asked for the best in their opinion. There were a few slightly more sexy tread patterns for the price but the chap reckoned the NCT's were the best all round tyres, others were good in the wet but not dry or vica versa or were a soft compound so would not last (again)!!

Once I have a few miles on the (and assuming I have a little more money in the back) I will stick them on the back and buy a set of F1's for the front!

Have fun with that CV boot m8

I'll follow the drive shaft boot theme with interest. I've just recalled at my last MOT the man said to replace one. It's likely Mr LRB will attempt it first since I'm still 'indisposed' to walk. I reckon I ought to park mine in Bracknell so you can practice on it. New handbrake cables in the boot too. Then you'll be fully skilled and perfect in fitting your own.:D:D:D

Anything for money............... (y)

Try that first and let me know how you get on. :):D What side has gone on your B the DS or PS? The DS is the one I did and you just dont get much space around the CV joint to open it up and remove the holding clips that let you take it off.

I did it in a few hours but its just a dirty crap job.

Is it not possible to get away with just removing the gearbox end and 'popping' the CV off to change the boot? I really need to take a look at a 'how to'.....

I would say a def no, and would go the other way via hub.

Doc is there a problem with movement on the hub to remove the driveshaft, never done it so not sure?

oh yeah, i'll follow this one up close :)

given the amount of work involved, it would be easier to just a supply of grease and be creative with a plastic baggie... grease up again every couple of weeks.

Unless it is relatively easy to split the shaft ?

On my Citroen the knuckle can't be rejoined after it is split,
it is easier and a lot faster to buy a whole half-axle with boots in good condition from a scrapper.
