indeed, think of it like making love to your new virgin wife on the honeymoon night ...

if she is a bad lay its tuff :p

Exactly. There is no law insisting that they provide you with an identical car to testdrive. If there was they'd have to have one the exact same colour with the same trim etc etc just to make sure you're happy with it.

I'm not looking for an identical car - I want to know what the gearbox is like.

If anyone has driven either a Peugeot 107 or Honda Civic, and can compare to how it drives to those, that would be sufficient. Sure, mechanically etc.. they may be different, but they were similar in the way they drove - close enough for me.

From what I can find out, when the car is stationary, if you let go of the brake, it will roll freely. You need to balance brake/gas until the clutch engages and it starts to drive. How difficult/easy is it to creep with it when parking?

That's the kind of thing I want to know! :)

Best regards,
Astro500.

As said above, go or possibly in another thread days ago - go and testdrive a 1.2 dualogic to make sure the gearbox is suitable for you and then go and testdrive a 1.4 manual (or have someone else drive it and sit as a passenger if you can't drive a manual) and then you'll have an idea.

:(

go and testdrive a 1.2 dualogic
That's the whole problem - none are available apparently!! :(

I've been calling around dealers in my area (read: within 60 miles) and I can't find anything.

Apparently the place I went yesterday is a main dealer, and they only had one (1.2L Manual 500C). They weren't prepared to drive it.

I've only ever seen two in the area, and can't be sure if it was the same one I saw.

Out of interest, how many are produced/year? Anyone know?

Best regards,
Astro500.

Try for a Panda or even go through Autotrader and have a testdrive in a private car, I know it's cheeky but if it gets you an idea of what it's like to drive then that can only be a good thing. I find the idea that no one has a dualogic hard to believe, both dealers I went to have most times had a dualogic car whether it be a Panda or a 500 available.

Dualogic is the same as Selespeed [I am certain, or are there differences] - so yes, that sums it up nicely.

There is no creep, it is not an autobox.

You should be able to try this out in other cars, not just 500s or Pandas.

Does an automatic only driving licence allow you to drive a semi-automatic car? I've not been able to find a clear definition. The misuse of words is interesting such as "manually operated clutch pedal", I can't remember the last time I operated the clutch pedal with my hand, i.e. manually.

Yep, as long as there's no manually operated clutch it's OK for an auto driver :)

manually as opposed to automatically
manually does not mean 'by hand'

yes this has been confirmed by Fiat

manually does not mean 'by hand'

Latin manus = hand, manually literally by hand.
Latin ped = foot, pedal literally operated by foot.

Manual can also mean operated non-automatically, you can have a "manually operated clutch" but since a pedal is operated by a foot you cannot have a "manually operated clutch pedal".

Oh dear god you can't be serious. Please don't go any further as you'll just end up making a fool of yourself.

Can someone confirm that the base chassis of the Ford Ka is from the Fiat 500?

Just looking on the Ford website, and it appears the interior of the Ka has a bit more than a passing resemblence to the 500. Especially the center console.

Me thinks I'm decided. 500 it is.

Yes the Ka is based on the Panda which the 500 is also based on.

OK! Interesting to see the heritage of a vehicle. I'd never have guessed.

I don't mean to be rude but if you'd just put "Fiat 500 review" into google you'd have found a lot of the information readily available. Yes forums are a great resource for people wanting to find information out which isn't readily available such as what does the instrument cluster on a sport look like compared to a lounge but there is a load of information in the form of reviews done by recognised motor journalists out there if you only look which answers most of your questions!

P.S I do hope you're actually going to testdrive a car before you buy it. Or we may have another thread like this -> https://www.fiatforum.com/500/209666-gearbox-noises.html where someone feels that perfectly normal operation indicates some sort of fault.

Hi,

Thanks for the links, but I already did that.

I hope I do too. Would be good.

When I look for problems, I don't seem to find any. When I started researching my 206 gearbox problems before the first one blew up I found no end of stuff on it that had I known prior to purchase, I quite simply wouldn't have bought it. I'm not finding anything like that with this. (y)
