Just come home from the hospital, where my granny lies dying. We know she is dying from some form of cancer it is sad to see her slowly get worse. She's suffered from mental problems for a while, so she hasn't being the way she used to be for a while.

We and anyone else can see she is in pain somewhere.. and the cancer is somewhere, but due to the fact she can't communicate very well (due to strokes we think) she can't tell us whats up!

My aunties and mother have persued an MRI scan for her to pinpoint where the pain is for some sort of paint killers to help her die without suffering.. The doctor said no as it would put her through unecessary suffering (lying on a bed and going through a large scanner hurts does it???) so we've come to the conclusion (and so have some nurses) that it's just a money thing! After days of trying to get them to do it, we offered to pay for it privately and guess what.. she's getting a scan now [8)

Not to go off on a rant, but my Grandad owned a very sucessful docking company (and probaly kept some of grimsby's economy going for a while lol) and paid so many taxes.. Yet his loving wife can't have a £400 scan.

But some little car stealer with drug problems, can go on a rehabilitation scheme that would cost thousands? Save the thousands of pounds to help these little s**ts (cut their b*ll*cks off and hang them on a tree for all I care), give it to the people that really need the help!

She may be old, she may not be needed in society but least she's worthy of government money.

I know we aren't the only people to have such a problem, but I needed to vent off my anger somewhere.

I have lots of sympathy for you. The trouble is, MRI scans are very costly to the NHS - I know because I went to a talk about them by one of the people who created it at Nottingham university (now a Noble prize winner). They are superb but always get ignored unless absolutely necessary

True they are expensive, but they are there to help ill people, not as an ornament... otherwise whats the point in having them. It's like buying a Jaguar, and not having enough money to run it, so you leave it on the driveway.

In a case such as this (an ill person) it should be used. Maybe I'm saying that because I love my gran.

The truth is, and it's a cold, sad reality, they hope that the people who are old and sick die before they have to spend any money on them as they feel it's a lost cause.

This government have got it sussed, let them wait, they'll die, it'll cost us nothing!

Another prime example of this is the TV licence, get this, you get it free once you are over 75 years old, well, I'll either be dead, or deaf or my eyesight will be that bad I won't be able to see the f**kin TV anyway, so what's the point, the point is they know you'll be dead soon, so they've given nothing away!

Same with pensions, raise the state pension age to 70, they should be dead, or nearly dead by then, this f**kin country! [!]

Mostly I agree but,

my gran and I'm sure lots of others is over 75 (and neither dead, deaf or blind) and is grateful for the free license. It is £110 she never had before which is handy as she is living on my Grandad's small pension

Also the thinking behind raising the pension age to 70 (65 for women) is simply because people have considerably longer lives now than they did when the 65/60 age was introduced, so claim their pensions for a longer period of time. This means the extra money has to come from somewhere.

Retiring at 70, you are hardly going to take off with your Final Salary Pension and go back packing to see the world. How exactly will you enjoy that pension scheme you've paid into for 50 years?

Sorry, this is just my opinion, retirement age should be reduced to 55, you should be made to pay a compulsory private pension from the age of 18, say 25% of your income, it would give the retiree a better quality retirement and make way for the younger members of society to fill the jobs the oldies release, and take the pressure off the Government to provide a measly state pension!

Well I have 3 grandparents all over 75, two of them have a top of the range lexus and are at home so infrequently their carpet doen't wear out!! (And the other is doing just fine)So I'm going for yes

Interesting idea for a complete change in the system, does seem sensible, only thing is I'm 19 now and when I leave uni to start with I'm not going want to start paying 25% as well as trying to pay off the debts!! Anyway good plan overall.

And sorry, no I haven't seen Logans run[8D]

Well, my step mum is 73 - fantastic quality of life!

She, and my dad, have just got back from a 14 day tour of Canada, 5 weeks in Oz last year, numerous trips to Dubai, Spain, etc.

Plus my auntie in her 70s, never left home and still lives with my 96 year old nan - she is always up London, meals out, etc.

Maybe they are lucky.

Logan, however, has different ideas, he goes on the run with his lover and so the adventure begins............................

This movie was made around the same time as Planet of the Apes (original) and Buck Rogers, so it's a bit corny by todays standards, but it has a good foundation for a remake, and judging by the bird he was on the run with, I'd like to be cast as Logan.................

Sorry to hear about your nan Digimods, I hope her last months are comfortable . I agree about the health service: every day I see money being wasted both on drug addicts with needle exchange (exchange? more like get free needles then leave them lying around for kids to find [!]) and non-reducing methadone doses. Also the amount of 'legal' drug addicts who are on long term opiate painkillers and benzos in this country is truly appalling, millions is going to waste on them [!].

As for the pensions thing, well there is no easy medium. The only way forward, with increasing numbers of elderly people and decreasing umbers of young people is to start cutting pensions back now, otherwise there is no way we can afford it. I really don't see why I should have to pay twice for pensions ie. pay privately for my own (because there probably won't be a state pension by the time I get old) and pay someone elses. Therefore Twincamms, with the scheme you are suggesting, someone could end up paying out 50% of their salary for pensions alone, not a very good scheme methinks. Only if the burden of paying for current pensions was taken away from the current taxpayer could they adequately save for a good retirement - but then who is going to pay for current pensioners? I agree with phasing in an increased retirement age and decreased pension as soon as possible to stave off any funding crisis, it's the only way to make people be more responsible about saving for their old age and as said above to prevent todays young persons from having to shoulder an intolerable burden. Or didn't you see If... on BBC2 a few mnths ago about this very issue?

Sorry Helz, we all have our own views, as 'the working dog of Europe' I think pension age should be decreased not increased. We already work the longest hours in Europe, do we have to work for the most years too?

Come on, you don't want to be getting up to go to work when you're 70!

You'll have done your bit for society by the time you reach 55/60, let someone else have a go and enjoy the winter of your life, it's very short as it is any way!

I understand the fiscal arguements, but if no one paid to fund a state pension and was forced to take out a private one, you wouldn't have an arguement.

So TC you are saying we should stop the state pension completely tomorrow so that todays youth can start saving for their own pensions is that correct? So how are todays pensioners to live? Must they go back to work? Because if the state pension payments from taxes don't stop then we can't start paying extra money into private pension pots and on goes the cycle.

And you must really hate your job if you want out. I don't see what's wrong with working till 70, I don't see what's wrong with working till 55 providing you can do so with no support from the state. My plan matures at age 60, but I daresay I shall keep on going as luckily I work in a job where I can have hours as flexible as I please.

And yes we all have our own views but we must also consider what is and is not financially possible and no current government is willing to think down the line on this issue. No good having pie in the sky ideas that will cause revolution or anarchy.
