Just wondering what the general consensus on the pronunciation of barchetta is.

For me it is bar-ketta. As far as my limited understanding of Italian goes, ch produces a hard k sound.

I've heard many folks pronounce the ch soft as in church.

Which camp do you fall into?

Jon

I speek Italian and it is BARKETTA. I had a heated exchange with a very arrogant parts man in my local Fiat dealership about this. He barely had a grasp of the english language so why he thought he was an expert in Italian I don't know.
Similarly Lancia is pronounced Lanchia

It is italian for "little boat" and is pronounced with a hard K. The English word Barque comes from the same root and describes a type of ship. It is an an honourable word in motor sport as it was applied to the first Ferrari, the 166 which had a streamlined shape reminiscent of an upturned boat. Fiats ownership of Ferrari, and their long motor sport history gave them the right to use it.
all the above without recourse to Google! , Oh the 166 is the capacity in cc of each of the twelve cylinders!

as a fluent italian speaker, renegade's post as well as those who said barchetta is pronounced "barrr-ketta" are correct (notice, that you have to roll your "r" in order to get the right pronounciation). And quite right primeruss: Lancia is pronounced "lann-chia" (extending the n a little bit more than usual).

Well done.

Carry on! :D

I'm having to remind myself of this now everyday, as up until now I've been in the guilty barCHetta camp. I seem to remember that when I last saw a B reviewed on the TV that they called it a barCHetta, so I guess that stuck with me. I'm happy with the hard "k" now, but I'm still struggling to order brus"k"etta at the local deli!!

:)

Know what you mean Matt.

The thing is, on next to every cookery program they will pronounce soft ch. Kinda sticks after a while.

I believe the proper way is "Barketta" since it means little boat and in greek a little boat is "varka" which is probably inherited from latin.

I'd have expected you being a proud Greek, to state that the Romans having copied the Greek culture, that the Greek word 'varka' was taken over by the Romans in Latin :)

As you can see though, there are Greeks that are not like the father in "My big fat Greek wedding" :p

Us Greeks have given the world a lot, but have also received a lot ;)
Truth Be Spoken!

Take care mate!

See... I think you all have the wrong end of the stick here....

Barchetta should be pronounced 'Mon-e-pit' coming from the latin 'I-ma-Broke' crossed with the early greek 'Hou-fickin-muc?'

Hope that's it settled once and for all;)
