Technical Heating problem

Hi I have a 2007 punto grande 1.4 8v petrol and when I start it straight away it says on the dash engine fluid temperature is to high. And gage goes all the way up for a second and the gives back down. Even though its cold then after a few seconds the engine just cuts out help please

Check -ve wire between battery and engine and between engine and bodywork.
