Wanted to ask really quick -- is it required to change rings fro oil galleries?

If your talking about the ones in the valve cover
It's what connects the VVT and oil galleries
Id only change the camshaft if they were leaking
They will be quite hard and flattened, they just pick out with something sharp
Id change the valve seals only if there's blue smoke on startup, and had the correct tool

You will find some o rings like this
This is a good example of how they squish flat
You just stab it with something sharp and they lift out
Getting everything clean takes the time, I used carb or brake cleaner whichever was cheapest at the time

Hi all! I’m currently working on tearing my engine apart – – just about ready to take the cam cover off, but it won’t budge and I’ve taken all the cam cover bolts out - any suggestions?

Does it feel wobbly, if you give it a gentle tap
Or is it solid
It maybe stuck down with gasket sealant
You still have to be careful as they are easy to damage, Something like a plastic ice scraper may help
Well done, getting the engine mount off is normally the worst bit

Thank you so much – – and I’m trying to be careful – – I wrapped a hammer and a rag and tried giving it gentle taps, I also tried using a plastic razor blade where the gasket lining is

it feels really solid and stuck
From memory there's only 8 bolt
Can you wiggle 1 with pliers
Put a block of wood under 2 and give it a firm tap, but don't hit it hard

Well done, looking healthily oily in there with no signs of black sludge or other "nasties"
Looks like you've got one of the "superior" all metal thermostat housings too!
When you undo the bolts
It's a good idea to undo them in the reverse order to which they are tightened
10,9,8.........
Also undo them progressively each bolt a bit at a time
If you haven't drained the coolant yet, it's easier to just syphon a bit out, without undoing anything

And, for those less experienced among us who may be reading this, NEVER slacken head bolts until an engine is completely cold - ie. leave overnight before tackling. Undoing them when the whole engine is not cold is a good way to encourage the head to warp, especially if it's an alloy one - as most are now a days.

To me it looks a bit red from a coolant leak (possibly) here
Could be just pushing out the cap, but the top of the exhaust manifold should be under the heat shield if fitted
Pin hole in the tube between the two arrows are not unknown

Updates: got a lot done today, and the head is way to be skimmed!!
